TM, you should read the conversations between Ralph Wiley and TSG in the Insider section. They go over some of this.

There's been a quest for authenticity in hip hop for the past 15 years. Hell, you can even argue that Vanilla Ice sparked that quest.

Studio executives have known for a long time that blacks go to see more movies than whites per capita. That audience has allowed black directors and stars to carve out their niche. For a couple of years they've come to the realization that the same white teenagers who are buying rap records (or downloading tracks, whatever) have no problem seeing movies with those same rappers.

I would argue that Elvis Presley is to Pat Boone as Justin Timberlake is to Vanilla Ice.

And The Wire is fantastic and has been so for some time. It's the same creative team behind Homicide: Life On The Streets.

elaborate on that if you want an answer.

But here's when you'll know there's more progress- when about half the white Americans* in the NBA get cut. You (not you Thurgreed) can make the argument that a substantial portion of the crowd is white and they want to see white guys playing, and it is a business selling a product- but that's so sad.

When the Pistons had Jon Berry he was a crowd favorite. He'd come in and hit some open 3s and people would go nuts. Meanwhile, anyone who knows basketball was thinking "oh shit. who is he going to guard?" and the coach knew he couldn't guard anyone so he'd get the hook pretty soon. I know plenty of kids who can hit 3s pretty regularly- that alone shouldn't be a ticket into the NBA. His being on the court was insulting my intelligence.

I was amazed/impressed when Dumars brought in Rasheed because the move cleaned out all white guys, and yet he trusted the fans to realize it made sense. He traded away Bobby Sura to get him, and Bobby actually does(did?) belong on the court. Rasheed coming in took all of Okur's time, so it was all black guys almost all the time- AND I've never once heard anyone complain.

*and I'm not some suck up white apologist, because my kid kicks the shit out of anyone in basketball (if he can just catch one more growth spurt, I'm buying you all lunch with the money Izzo will be saving me)

This is just wrong. I thought you were quoting Whitman. Or at least quoting Sarandon quoting Whitman. But this?

I don't think so, although I kind of lost track on the day to day stuff later in his career.

Okay, I should have said "directly."

I confess I used to love the TV show. But I never saw the movie. That may also be wrong.
