The knocks against Sideways,in particular among some on this board, and generally amongst critics, are (respectively) that (a) it's probably overly pretentious with wine references, and therefore it must suck, and (b) it's a movie that appeals to overeducated wine snobs, and because most movie critics fit that demographic, of course they'll like it.
Saw the movie this weekend. Gattigap's verdicts:
(a) Untrue
(b) Who cares?
It's that good. Anyone who likes wine, or California wine country (albeit Southern CA wine country) should see this movie. Beyond the sense of place, the movie possesses great timing, wonderful dialogue and excellent acting.
Thomas Hayden Church moves beyond the sitcom, and on occasion can actually act. Giamatti, admittedly, specializes in playing complicated losers, but this role is the one on which he'll look back fondly, because he'll not find a better one than this. Virginia Madsen possesses the New Atticus Ratio, and is entirely bangable.
If the Alan Funk/Candid Camera FB Extravaganza does not occur for whatever reason, I hereby invite all FBers to do the tour of Santa Ynez Valley. Ty, I'll even drive.

Pretty Little Flower's verdicts:
(a) True
(b) Who cares?
That's right, who cares. You don't need a movie critic to tell you if you will like this film. If you are a whimpering little pussy, then go see it. You'll love it. This is a film for pussies, and you -- yes you, you oh-so-emotional-and-sensitive-pussy-boy -- will really dig this film. See it with that special girl. You know, the one who is not so hot but with whom you have really good conversations. It's the perfect date movie for you two. Oh, excuse me - not "movie," but rather "film." Anyhoo, you guys are going to have the greatest really deep conversation after seeing this one. Oh, but don't expect to get any action from her. Her jaw is exhausted from giving me unsolicited fellatio. What is her name again?

You are no longer the gold standard of ruffled gayness. Which seems somehow perfect.

When is this pinhead football season over? The most overrated sport. I would rather watch hockey and the fans are cuter and less prone to baseball caps.
You guys can keep Sharapova, who I don't get outside of her long blonde but stringy hair. Karolina Sprem has the best body since Kournikova and probably the best arms, shoulders, back (and Kournikovian TITS) I have seen on a tennis player.
Sadly, without riskng spoilers, I cannot really peruse for a great pic but here is a start. Really the back and profile is worth seeing. And in some pifcs, she has that kind of Slavic/Seles face but actually looks much better on tv.
eta that this is one of those Slavic/Seles face pics

Sounds like it was a big movie weekend. If anyone missed this little gem while in theatres, I highly recommend it: About Schmidt.

I randomly saw "Logan's Run" for the first time while channel surfing. I enjoyed the hell out of it.

I thought he was the worst part of the movie. Great character. He just couldn't pull it off. Everybody has this friend, so it's worse when you cast someone who so obviously can't pull it off.
I don't know why there is Oscar buzz for this flick. It was a good little movie, but come on. It doesn't deserve to win anything. I guess it's just a weak Oscar year.

I don't think Michael Vick is overrated. I think he is undercoached. The guy is amazing. But when you prepare for a game thinking the other team is going to blitz you the whole time and you run every play or keep everybody back to protect against the blitz, sending only two receivers out (again and again) into heavy coverage, you're fucked. You're also quite screwed if you don't make any adjustments based on how the other team is defending you.
Roethlisburger was overfuckingrated. Good God. And you can throw Peyton Manning in there as well.
Tom Brady is quite good, but also overrated given the number of times the broadcasters suck his dick on the air.
