Pre-Death "Funerals"

There is one at my church tonight for a woman with very advanced ALS. They are calling it a celebration of her life.

I was thinking maybe all the woman's family would be in town for Thanksgiving, the weather in December might be too cold for her to go out and they didn't think she'd make it through the winter.

But the Fugee Mom mentioned she went to one at her church last week.

The family of the woman in my church is having a tough year. She is the grandmother of the girl who was killed on the LIRR tracks earlier this fall.
Does that get you a ticket to get out of going to the actual funeral? Because if not, seems like you could say goodbye to a person without the gathering.

Cigarette Close Encounters

As NYC gets more and more packed, I try to avoid getting my clothes and my person signed by errant cigarettes. That is so annoying. So my two bought at the outlet but orignally priced expensive as hell coats are at risk as is my cashmere scarf because you need to smoke a ciggy at all costs. it stinks and makes your skin look like shit just so you know. fuckers.

It seems like it's supposed to be a chance for the nearly-dearly-departed to be able to revel in all the love without having to rely on their future ability to hover ethereally over their coffin.

It actually reminds me a little of a trend I saw reported in the WSJ a while back (and maybe discussed here). Spinsters who give up ever getting married but don't want to miss out on the loot (considering all the gifts they bought for their friends who got divorced within a year or two) throw themselves showers.

Overheard in NY:

Hipster #1: He was just ghetto. I walked in and there were Mountain Dew bottles on every surface. Ghetto.
Hipster #2: Mountain Dew is ghetto?

I don't get this.

Quit asking for their autographs.

I don't know if they'll have a real funeral later on. It seems like this should take the place.

I have to go to the one tonight -- at least to help set up ahead of time -- because she was a longtime member of a church ministry team I'm on. But I think I'll step out during the actual event because I've only met her once. She had to stop coming to meetings because of her illness before I started.

All in all, I don't think I want to attend my own funeral.

When she was fatter, she was more down to earth and helpful and mooned less* over celebrities. Now she is just annoying as hell and out of touch. I have not tested this theory, but I suspect that it's true.

The moon grows to full
Wanes, before growing again
Kind of like Oprah
