Spree: NEW YORK — The city violated the First Amendment rights of two firefighters and a police officer when it fired them for riding on a parade float in blackface in 1998, a judge ruled Tuesday.
U.S. District Judge John E. Sprizzo said the government "may not prohibit the expression of an idea simply because a segment of society finds it offensive."
I totally did not hear about this when it happened but the decision seems solid. I gotta ask though, what were these guys thinking???

Well, they had at least one other hit -- the much beloved "Black Coffee in Bed." Good video, too.
And I happen to like "Tempted."

Agreed. And having given us both Taco and Falco, the Germans have a lot to apologize for, so our shipping over our talentless dreck to them is fair play.

You forgot the hirsuite Nena.

I don't not like Tempted, but I love so many of their other tunes that it isn't my fav by any stretch. In a nutshell, their sound is classic and I always love to sit on the deck at night and listen to them after a game while slurping beers. I guess I didn't realize that Black Coffee had been a hit either -- I just wasn't in touch in the 80s.

Those are harder. Without googling, I know that 2 is Dream Academy, 3 is Murray Head (from the musical "Chess") and 6 is Talk Talk (I think, wasn't the band name the same as the song). I forget who sang 1, 4, and 5.
Did you all have the one hit wonder band the Payola$? That song was stuck in my head the other day. They may have been mercifully confined to Canadian airplay.
I also had the Romantics' Talking in your Sleep in my head the other day as well. Ugh.

Squeeze is a good example of a group that doesn't belong. While they only had one major hit, they had enough of a career and a body of work to merit exclusion... "Black Coffee in Bed" and "Mussels From a Shell", among others, are great songs.

The City plans to appeal so we may one day get to see how the Supreme Court goes on this one and whether or not it can uphold this while keeping the porn filters ("I know it when I see it").

I totally agree. Then again, I don't think there is total agreement on the definition of one-hit wonder.
What about, uhhhhh, Big Country? Was that on VH1s list??

I liked that song. They also did "What I Like About You."
Though visually, those guys were the embodiment of "Video Killed the Radio Star."

Talk Talk's better song was It's My Life. The video had animals running across the plains and drawn in birds (and this was pre-Lion King). I also knew the Murray Head one, but I wouldn't have remembered the name if it wasn't on the quiz. Saw both Squeeze and Paul Young in an old theater venue during the 80s, so maybe now I can be TF's best friend... Well maybe not.
