Trying to get out of jury duty here? I didn't know you were called.
I think many jurors either don't understand the law or disregard it and go with their own sense of what would be the right verdict.

I would understand the law, but if I didn't agree with it, I am doing what I think is right. And I would feel good about it, too.

Speaking of good times, check this shizznit from the 714.

Young Accusers Arrested, Led From School in Cuffs

This rends my liberal soul. For whom to bleed: the low-income juveniles plagued with criminal stupidity, or the homeless bystander who suffered, Christ-like, for their hijinks? Maybe we should poll them all on abortion so I can figure out who the bad guys are. Until then, wait for the Lifetime movie.

I hope you are joking about feeling sorry for the kids simply because of their income level. Their income level has nothing to do with their actions. Parents of all income levels admonish their children for coming home late for good reason. If these low income kids had parents who actually cared where they were and would discipline them for coming home late without calling, that sounds like they had parents who were doing a pretty good job looking after them.

That is actually insulting to them that you feel the need to pity them or excuse their actions merely because they are poor. Being poor doesn't necessarily mean you are neglected or otherwise not loved or raised properly by your parents.

This is the problem with elitist liberals like yourself- you think you are better than poor people but that makes you feel guilty, To make yourself feel better, you magnanimously deem poor people not responsible for their own actions because it is all the fault of their environment.

I am certain the living conditions of Americans in our state prisons is far worse than the foreigners being held at Guantanomo.

While I am sure that it sucks to be held when you are innocent, I am also equally sure that the soldiers at Guantanamo are treating the detainees, especially the younger ones, respectfully.

subtlety is god unless its not. i didn't catch this at first, but this the ultimate test. i think its called the Gerri Blank's kid test, or "fuck 'em unless they're ours." Ty didn't want the Democratic boy who hid knives on panes prosecuted, remmeber. Here, i guess it boils down to whether the girls lied about the homeless guy as some statement against the Bush administration.

Did I read the wrong article about the drunk driver? My understanding was a guy in his pathfinder was surrounded by a crowd of celebrators and, when he couldn't move forward or backward, gunned car, and ran people over. Is there anything cops really can do about that?
I didn't read that, and I don't doubt it. Still, a 1000 people on a street (e.g., on a street full of bars) is a perfect reason to shut the street down to vehicle traffic for 30 or 45 minutes until the crowd cools off. Longer if necessary. In the alternative, 100 people on every street can be easily controlled by mobile teams of 20-40 officers. They just go to where the people are acting stupid.

In the Boston case, I'm confident that the answer would have been to shut the streets to vehicular traffic temporarily.
And when you have the manpower to clear the streets, than you do so.

To update the story, today's Globe says the dead kids father is a captain in the state police. I'm sure professional courtesy has him biting his tongue (which is why the mother was mouthing), but he more than anyone is in a place to criticize. One of the things that is typically done, is the state police are part of the plan, and they provide a lot of specialized resources (helicopters, security for government buildings) to supplement the locals. Assuming (and I haven't heard anything either way) that the state police weren't on standby or out in force either, I wonder if they maybe offered to provide troops but were turned down. If the possibility of largescale disturbances was missed by both agencies (and others, like nearby suburbs), I'd be extremely surprised.

Seriously, this is the kind of thing that gets local emergency workers cheering against their hometeams weeks before the championship (superbowl).

In even more news, the new commissioner called the mom and then sat down with her. While it sounded like she wasn't throwing accusations out towards her predecessor, the mom gave her glowing reviews and said she seemed to be a "wonderful person" or something like that.

Hello

Richard Cohen on the Whole Guard Flap

Cohen's column in today's WaPo, written before anyone knew the big "press conference" was coming up:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn...-2004Feb9.html

Cohen reflects candidly on his own Guard service in the Vietnam era, confessing that he was one whom Michael Moore would call a "deserter", and uses that as a springboard to discuss the flap surrounding the President's service. I enjoyed the column.

I don't have all the details of what was "produced" at the news conference, but I'm just SO glad that the President is having to spend time talking about this stuff. I just wish it was closer to the election.

He got pretty much a free ride in the 2000 campaign, as compared to Gore (except for the "stupid" and "grammar" things, but those ended up helping him) but what goes around comes around.

I saw that story in the LA times today, and thought it was one of the more interesting stories in any of the papers I look at.

While I don't like the idea that *someone* had to be singled out for this example, I honestly hope that this is a story that parents and teachers everywhere can use to teach kids about the dangers of lying.

Although, kids these days are smart. They might just see it as the dangers of coming clean.

your shining star was a flat out draft dodger and he was elected twice. you new guy, the war hero, threw his medals in the reflecting pool, but they weren't really his medals. i hope the Dems spend time on this, you won't gain one vote. People who vote on security issues know what they see when they look at Kerry and Bush.
Agian, take the money you are planning on putting ito the Presidential campaign and go make some senate races competitive.

I blame Bush. I mean, what kind of example does he set, not showing up to fulfill his National Guard obligation? The kids saw that, they figured, Hey, the President of the United States was late for work and got away with it, why should I be where I'm supposed to be? I ask you, what kind of example for your kids is #43? I'm outraged. I need to call some radio talk show and rant.

That is what worries me - that they made such a big show of it that the kids will instead see it as what happens when you tell the truth and admit to wrong doing.
