What's to get? "Ghetto" is slang for "cheap" or "low class." Ghetto kids used to use it to describe shit. Suburban white kids picked up on it and now love it. I suppose they get to be offensive without really being offensive since the word, used that way, is so accepted as slang now. Hipsters must have embraced it as well. I think it's unbelievably stupid and almost slapped my cousin when she used it around me the first time years ago.
Long story longer, hipster #1 is saying the place and the person he was visiting was low class because (i) the host didn't bother to clean up and/or (ii) said host had cheap, low class taste. Hipster #2, possibly wondering if the last time he had Mountain Dew everyone around him considered him ghetto as well, wanted clarification on whether Mountain Dew consumption in and of itself signaled ghettoness.

Mountain Dew has been heavily marketed to boarder dudes lately. Or so my 16 year old nephew would tell me.
And I think in its previous marketing life, it went well with menthol cigarettes.

Son, we live in a world that has walls, and those walls have to be guarded by men with guns. Whose gonna do it? You? You, dirty immigrant? I have more responsibility here than you could possibly fathom. You weep for Kurt Cobain, and you curse the marines. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know. That Cobain's death, while tragic, probably saved lives....

I would rather you just said "thank you," and went on your way. Otherwise, I suggest that you pick up a weapon and stand at post. Either way, I don't give a damn what you think you are entitled to.

I love this show. I haven't watched this week's episode yet. But based on last week's episode, let me guess. [possible spoiler alert] The doctor who is dating Dexter's stupid sister* and who helped the Ice Truck Killer's sole living victim recover (and provided him prosthetics) is the Ice Truck Killer?**

*I don't know why they hired her for this role. She and the lieutenant are both absolutely horrible. I didn't like the overpumped black guy at first either, but I think he's starting to figure out his character.
**Don't answer this question. Seriously.

What's the ruling on the use of "trailer park" (the flyover state equivalent of "ghetto")?

I like the sister and the Lieutenant. you mean the actresses not the roles, right? The sister role fits her Tom-boyish looks. It wouldn't work with some stunning actress.

I've only heard it used when referring to something that you might actually find only in a trailer park, which is to say, I've rarely heard it used at all. But if used in a way similar to "ghetto," it's just as stupid.

I think for the purposes of the Overheard in New York comment, yes, hipsters and boarders are the same group.
According to Wikipedia, I am wrong regarding the prior marketing angle. I just remember a lot of my 20-something, Newport-smoking pals also drinking Mountain Dew (and Sprite).
Quote:
Mountain Dew was originally marketed as "zero proof moonshine" and had pictures of hillbillies on the bottle until 1973. In the 1970s through the late 1980s Mountain Dew had the crude nickname of "hillbilly piss" due to the carry-over bottle art and yellow coloring, but that usage has since fallen out of favor.
Today's marketing target is radically different. The drink is mainly marketed to people in the 20-30 year old demographic group, and Mountain Dew advertising creates a connection between the drink and extreme sports.
