Poll: Load up the car CD changer
With the summer driving season upon us, it's time to revisit RB's great poll question from last year:
Your friends on the FB are going on a road trip. Load up their CD changers with great driving CDs. The changer holds five discs.
Radiohead - Amnesiac
Jane's Addiction - Ritual de lo Habitual
The La's - The La's
De La Soul - Buhloone Mind State
A Mighty Wind - Soundtrack (on repeat until you can sing "Blood on the Coal" flawlessly)

The Cherry Poppin' Daddies were a great live band before the whole swing thing broke. I have a lot of friends who wore out their cassette copies of their first album, "Ferociously Stoned." The local paper would only print their name as "the Daddies," claiming that the full name implied incest.
In the sad-but-true file, worn out from years of touring in vans and playing dive bars all over the west coast, the Daddies' keyboard player quit to become an insurance adjuster. A few months later, "Zuit Suit Riot" broke. Bad timing, dude.

I wouldn't count Ben Folds out just yet. He could have another hit. He's on tour with Tori Amos. The Verve broke up, but the Glimmer Twins will be happy to cash another check once we put "Bittersweet Symphony" on the comp.
On the VH-1 show, we can have a "Wasn't Swingers a good movie? Who would have thought that it would take nearly a decade for Vince Vaughn to make a movie anyone wanted to see?" discussion with Lauren Graham and Conan O'Brien.
Those who think that bluegrass will remain popular should consider the swing revival and not take out any 30-year mortgages, no matter how low interest rates are.

With the move to Vegas, at least her husband has easy access to plenty of high-end hookers, not to mention legal brothels a county or so away.
Isn't he like 100 years old or something, anyway?

Close he's 60.
And how did I miss this?
LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) -- A civil lawsuit claims Rene Angelil -- the husband and manager of pop diva Celine Dion -- raped a woman in her Las Vegas hotel room two years ago and threatened to kill her "if my wife finds out about this."
The suit, filed March 15 in Las Vegas by Yun Kyeong Sung Kwon and her husband, AE H. Kwon, seeks to set aside a settlement agreement between the couple and Angelil because he allegedly failed to offer an apology and get tested for HIV and hepatitis. The Kwons were given an undisclosed amount of money as part of the June 2000 settlement.

Poll: Load up the car CD changer
I would take:
1. Mos Def, Black on Both Sides
2. Blackalicious, Blazing Arrow
3. Earth Wind and Fire, Greatest Hits
4. Charlie Hunter, Songs from the Analog Playground
5. OutKast, Aquemini
The OddMan adds:
1. Handsome Boy Modeling School, So . . . How's Your Girl?
2. Stanton Moore, Flying the Koop
3. Outkast Greatest Hits
4. Brand New Heavies, Greatest Hits
5. Dial M, Maceo Parker
Edited to add: yes, I know it's cheating, but he's sitting right here. We took all of these on our car trip through the South -- and no one died!

Ahh, but if you were really kewl, you would have seen them when they were still called Mookie Blaylock. Pearl Jam, Schmerl jam.
I saw Nirvana, Soundgarden, and Mudhoney in various clubs, pre-major labels. Had a beer with Mark Arm, a genuinely nice guy who is starting to look disturbingly like Iggy Pop.
|
A bit late, and full of steak, but...
I've seen Blues Traveler in a Columbia resident hall.
I saw "Vernon Reid's Living Colour" in a school gym. Different than the Forest Hills gym I saw the Ramones in.
I've saw the Donnas in a bar the week their first album came out.
I saw Metallica, with Dave Mustaine, at L'Amour in Brooklyn.
I've met every member of Anthrax on several occasions and shared a beer and cigar with Mike Patton [same night as the Bijou Phillips hookup].
I've also had a few beers with some washed-out dude from a seminal NY punk band.

Technically speaking, I think they are.
And apropos of nothing, I was going to say the other day in connection with that awful VH-1 list that "Fake Plastic Trees" is the best song of the last 15 years.
Done serial posting...maybe.

1. New Pornographers, Electric Version
2. Fountains of Wayne, Welcome Interstate Managers
3. Supergrass, In It for the Money
4. Elvis Costello, This Year's Model
5. Kelly Willis, Easy
It's also not a coincidence that there are three Fountains of Wayne CDs and two New Pornographers CDs, just in case you decide there's no reason to play "Pump It Up."
Those, like Atticus, who dig Radiohead should listen to True Love Waits by Christopher O'Riley. He's worked out transcriptions for solo piano for fifteen Radiohead songs. Good stuff.
edited to add commas for readability

Unless you lived in my friends shore house last year, where every Ben Folds song [both solo and "Five"] was played ad naseum - Ben Folds Top 40, if you will.
That is, until I literally threw a CD out the window like a frisbee and got suckerpunched for a fat lip.

Doesn't the fact that Radiohead had a breakthrough hit with "Creep" cut against your argument re: "Fake Plastic Trees"? Or are you saying that "Creep" was the one hit and "Fake Plastic Trees" is just a great song that neither of us heard on the radio, or saw on MTV, or remembered from Clueless?
Speaking of Clueless...
Can Alicia Silverstone go back to playing the Reese Witherspoon role in movies again? I just don't like Reese Witherspoon, and it's not like Alicia doesn't have the free time. I'm sure Alicia has apologized for gaining weight and playing Batgirl. She's learned her lesson, and I'm sure she won't do it again. Besides, shouldn't she get credit for all that faux-lesbionic time served with Liv Tyler in all of those Aerosmith videos. Shouldn't t.A.T.u. have to pay them royalties or something? Couldn't Britney Murphy at least pushed to have Alicia be the maid-of-honor in Just Married? Am I asking too much here?

Lord knows I'm as macho as the next man,* but "High & Dry" and "Fake Plastic Trees" actually make me mist up when I hear them, esp. "Trees." It's a beautiful and heartfelt song.
*If the next man is Nathan Lane.

No. Because "Creep" is [and will be] their only hit here in the States, or at least the 48. No idea what those crazy Alaskans or Hawaiians are doing.
"Fake Plastic Trees" is their best pop song - clearly unappreciated by both the masses (Republicans) and Atticus (Democrats).
I also can think of 13 other Radiohead songs, none of which I can name - nor can you, think about it - which are better than "Creep". And I'm not including "Hail...Thief", on which the verdict is still out. As it took me a month for "Kid A", I'll give it it's due.
