Sister: It's not about her looks at all. It's half the fault of the character and half the fault of the actress. The character has Dexter do all her work for her and takes credit for it. But when he disagrees with her (and of course he's right), she gets all pissy. It's fucking stupid. Plus the actress doesn't seem like she knows what she's doing.
Lieutenant: She looks like a man to me. I can't get past that. Plus, the character seems overly petty. She's overly focused on what the sister is doing. She has this attraction to Dexter that makes no sense. And she seems inept at her job.
It's like the writers did a study on serial killers and came up with this great character and storyline and are forcing all these other non-essential characters in as filler, without really knowing what they're doing. Either that or they are trying to convert a detailed, sophisticated book* into a tv show and got the feel for the important stuff right, but are fucking up the rest.

In NY, the phrase I hear most often for that is WT=(as in white trash)

According to Wikipedia, I am wrong regarding the prior marketing angle. I just remember a lot of my 20-something, Newport-smoking pals also drinking Mountain Dew (and Sprite).

There was a song about Mountain Dew that we had to learn when I was in elementary school and sing along with the teacher on our ukeleles. It was about moonshine.
Here is the first verse:
My brother Bill runs a still on the hill
Where he turns out a gallon or two
And the buzzards in the sky get so drunk they can not fly
Just from sniffing that good old mountain dew.
The teacher had to explain to us what a still was, and a buzzard etc.

No, it was right around the switchover to the metric system, so we all knew what gallons were. Actually, I'd be hard pressed to find a Canadian who doesn't know what a gallon is.

No doubt harder than to find an American who doesn't know what a liter is.

We were 10 years old! Not all of us grew up with Fisher Price's Jim-Bob's Still replicas. Or had one in the garage.

There are lots of characters, and the show is still new. They'll come around over a season or two.
Sis has a big chip on her shoulders, and half of it is Dexter's "fault." Of course she'd be unlikely to share credit with him. And it's okay she's dumb, lots of people are. That's intentional, isn't it? Like the guy getting out of the trailer- they did that to make her look sort of incompetant.
And she's still new to being a cop. If she's still questioning Dexter after a few more times with him being right, then maybe she is stupid.
Lieutenant hitting on Dexter is weird, and I bet it is a very developed character in the book. Like when she was with the Cuban boy and she was so sad to see him be taken away, I guess it was to show how wistful she is that she doesn't have kids (apparently). But still it just came from left field. Who knew she was unhappy at all?
The writing is very creative. You give them and chance and watch the problems go away.

How did you ever learn about chemistry?
It was the still that first interested me in science.

my best office view EVER looked down on the Canadian Club distillery across the Detroit River. There was this neon sign that went on at dusk and scrolled the brand "Canadian Club." Repeatedly.
So if I was working after dark I was just watching this scrolling sign (like writing the words in cursive) try to tempt me to leave work and start drinking. Not that I would drink CC but CC Classic is nice.
Anyway all this Canadian still talk at dusk reminded me of that.
