260 out of over 40,000 in an urban area? A bit over 1/2 of 1%? Not surprising at all. I've voted at old residences before - especially back in my 20s when it was not uncommon to move every year.

According to the Harris County Tax Assessor (who I trust a little, not much, but a little more than Andy Taylor) says that there were 167 votes cast by people who didn't live in the county. They wouldn't meet the statutory exemption because they're not in the same county. However, no one knows who they voted for.

Clearly the entire election needs to be thrown out, and Congress should do the same over the irregularities in Ohio.

Ah, I wasn't clear, but I was more explaining the source of my amusement (which centered from the WASH election) than commenting on the TX thingie.

Yeah, I just read one quick little blurb on it, and pulled the 260 out of that. (I'd never heard of this race until you spoke of it.)

Oops. Normally don't read subject lines, but saw it on RT's post - thought it was hers.

Ah, you only let them vote at their old address if they live in the same county? Mass. lets people vote at the old address period, though I think there is a time limit on it. But then, everyone around here knows that you don't have to live in a congressional district to run in it, especially if your name is Kennedy.

$1200 for tires?? WTF?
How would it look if a Supreme Court Justice went rolling in some hoopty, like a little ol' Justice of the Pizz-eace?

So CT got himself a nice set of 24" rims . . . don't be a playa hata, Gattigap.

From the normally reliable Nelson Report, via Atrios:
  • There is rising concern amongst senior officials that President Bush does not grasp the increasingly grim reality of the security situation in Iraq because he refuses to listen to that type of information. Our sources say that attempts to brief Bush on various grim realities have been personally rebuffed by the President, who actually says that he does not want to hear "bad news."

Rather, Bush makes clear that all he wants are progress reports, where they exist, and those facts which seem to support his declared mission in Iraq...building democracy. "That's all he wants to hear about," we have been told. So "in" are the latest totals on school openings, and "out" are reports from senior US military commanders (and those intelligence experts still on the job) that they see an insurgency becoming increasingly effective, and their projection that "it will just get worse."

Our sources are firm in that they conclude this "good news only" directive comes from Bush himself; that is, it is not a trap or cocoon thrown around the President by National Security Advisor Rice, Vice President Cheney, and DOD Secretary Rumsfeld. In any event, whether self-imposed, or due to manipulation by irresponsible subordinates, the information/intelligence vacuum at the highest levels of the White House increasingly frightens those officials interested in objective assessment, and not just selling a political message.

Chris Nelson? Josh's almost-most-frequent source? Friend of every liberal blog ever written? The guy who, back in February, explained patiently that Bush's economy was in meltdown - "implosion", I think he called it - and that it was all over but the shouting and the window-jumping?

He does do a nice job when dealing with Dem sources - they talk to him, he gets it right, and he writes well - but I do have to question what kind of access he would have to people in the administration - "senior officials" - who weren't already constantly looking to rip Bush a new one. After all, Nelson would be a great one to talk to if you wanted to get Bush. I can't see him having close friends in the WH aside from those types, and I'm not sure I'd believe one of them saying such things.

I suspect his accuracy at least rivals that of your recollection -- be that as it may, there is obviously a difference between making economic predictions and relating what sources are telling you.

But you are very consistent. Any bad news re Iraq, and you question the messenger.
