Jesus. I was just doing this last night. The co-eds were great. I can still do it at 28, right?

80s videos were fun even when they were stupid or pretentious because the medium was new and no-one had ever seen or done it before. Now, we've all watched them for 20 years so it gets tiresome more quickly. But I think the original-sound-to-derivative-copycat-crap ratio gets to be about the same in every musical style cycle.

So what? When I have kids, I won't really care what they think of the music I listen to. And I didn't care about the music my parents liked -- just because I didn't like doesn't make it bad. "Ewww, parents' music" to me meant "I don't like it" not "I can't believe you listen to that crap."

thank you for this clarification. your earlier post was the same as an oldie station. the alternative to the oldie station is I suppose some "alternative" station that plays shit that sounds like a song Buzzcocks or Roxy Music or Gang of Four could have done in 1978. The familar sound is still there, its just not as familar. The difference is nothing more than pretension. the parallel to "a way to go post" on this board and pop music is still there. oldies stations and this board are 95% pablum to waste a first moments of your day with a gentle buzz, but upon reflection your realize the song (or post) is ultimately trite. the other 5% has merit. but not the posts in question. the realization you are becoming your parents or fighting the urge to ease into being your parents by intentionally avoiding what you would otherwise do, this is your crusade? its like Margaret said in Liquid Sky to the old hippie "and you all wore blue jeans as a symbol to show you won't conform- at least realize you're in uniform?"
|
This post is wholly illustrative of the problem. What does young bridge see as the only alternative to listening to the same old re-hashed shit on his/her oldies or classic rock station? Turning to the Clear Channel version of an "alternative" radio station and listening to the shit that will be on the classic rock stations in twenty years. Shit that is absolutely horrible, but that bridge will convince himself/herself (in twenty years) that he or she likes because it is familiar to him or her. Same goes to you, g-cubed. May I suggest a different "alternative"? Turn off your fucking radio and go see some music that may not officially endorsed by Clear Channel. At first, you will miss basking in the rosy glow of corporate sponsorship, but you will get over this.
Jesus, it's like I need to spell everything out for you people. You are collectively trying my patience more than usual this morning.

Quit being such a snob, O Cooler-Than-Thou. Some bands are in small clubs because they just suck.

honey we're on the same page, I just see the futility in claiming what you'll get to won't sound like something you heard before. I have a 4 disc changer in my car, there are 3 cd's by one band and a fourth by another. neither has corporate sponsorship, has been on the radio that I heard, and likely won't be on "a sounds of 2000" oldies station in 2020. It's still derivative, fuck cave painting were derivative, they cause a familar buzz in your head even if you are ugg the cave man looking at the first one, you'd think "shit this reminds me of the day arrg and I hunted that bison."

Do you know what I am doing right now (besides typing on my computer)? I am eating a peach. A simple peach of the common man. A peach that was organically grown by a salt-of-the-earth farmer who has no nostalgia for '80s crap, nor has he even heard of that Frenchy April chick. He is a simple farmer who, when done tending to his peach harvest, goes home to his wife and plays fiddle tunes to her all night. I am much like this farmer, only in an urban lawyer kind of way. Your elitism accusation could not have been more off the mark.
I am now done with the peach.

Mine too. Too bad I can't remember how I managed to kill all those brain cells. Wonder if I had fun?

OK, Pretty Little Flamer, if you really want fresh, cutting edge, not the same old stuff, I'd suggest "new music", e.g., classical music of the last few decades. Try George Rochberg, Akio Yashiro, or even, if this stuff is too much for you, more accessible stuff like Kronos Quartet. Or try some of the jazz that's happened in that time frame. Your drugged out garage bands just don't reach the same level of creativity; may not be hipper-that-thou, but that's where you'll find what you mistakenly think you're listening to.

What you write is a fair and well-taken. But by agreeing with Less' post, I was not trying to make the point that, by eschewing 80s revivalism and classic rock stations, you will find music that is so fresh and original that it cannot be traced in any way back to any prior music. I was making a different point. Something about peaches.

Oh thanks, that's great advice. Jazz, you say? You think I might enjoy this musical form? Wow, that's really thinking outside the box. Yes, this whole "listening to jazz" idea seems a little bit out there, but maybe I will give it a try.

Music haters
As an alternative to music I recommend audio books because a lot of times I can be such a fucking geek. As the geeks out there know, you will find some cool "reader" choices that make the book a notch more interesting sometimes. When not listening to audio books, I listen to Eminem and only Eminem. All Em all the time. And none of that censored "you can buy it at Walmart" crap for me. Why? Because I like cruising with the rag-top down and sitting at stoplights bellowing lyrics like "God damnit you little mother-fucker if you ain't got nothing nice to say then don't say nothing. Ahhh Fuck that shit bitch." That is why. And if you don't want your kids to hear the fucking righteous tunes blaring from my system I suggest rolling up your windows cuz I ain't resting until the whole world gets Em's message.

Study: Pot Doesn't Cause Permanent Brain Damage
By Deena Beasley
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) -
Smoking marijuana will certainly affect perception, but it does not cause permanent brain damage, researchers from the University of California at San
Diego said on Friday in a study.
"The findings were kind of a surprise. One might have expected to see more impairment of higher mental function," said Dr. Igor Grant, a UCSD professor of psychiatry and the study's lead author. Other illegal drugs, or even alcohol, can
cause brain damage.
His team analyzed data from 15 previously published, controlled studies into the impact of long-term, recreational cannabis use on the neurocognitive ability of adults.
The studies tested the mental functions of routine pot smokers, but not while they were actually high, Grant said.
The results, published in the July issue of the Journal of the International Neuropsychological Society, show that marijuana has only a marginally harmful long-term effect on learning and memory.
No effect at all was seen on other functions, including reaction time, attention, language, reasoning ability, and perceptual and motor skills.

Wellll, this is not entirely accurate. Pot is unpredicatble. I sometimes get baked late at night and feel like a totally happy sn of abitch the next day - bright eyed, sharp and relaxed as hell. Other times (this wednesday for example), the indulgence of the night before makes me feel kinda slow in the morning.
I've sworn for tears that pot is harmless, and it is, but that said, there have been times when I've forgotten my train of thought in front of a judge for no good reason, and those times tned to follow evenings where I decided one bowl wasn't enough.
S(Sure, maybe over the long term dope won't affect you, but I don't recommend getting to high the night before oral argument on anything)D
