Atticus, I'm sure you will cite me something to the contrary, but this is Animal Control, not fish and game. Are they one and the same? Fish and Game guys often need to be armed b/c they encounter poachers and people with guns. Animal Control scrape up dead raccoons and kill pets. I call bullshite.

THE JOB
FISH AND GAME WARDENS are the law enforcement agents of the State and federal fish and wildlife agencies. They enforce laws and regulations designed to protect and conserve fish and wildlife. While patrolling assigned areas, wardens warn, cite, and arrest individuals suspected of violations and may seize the fish, game, and equipment connected with the violation. They collect information and report on the condition of fish and wildlife in a specific area. They may supervise the activities of seasonal
workers. Wardens with the federal government are known as special agents
(wildlife).
Wardens work out-of-doors in all seasons and weather conditions. The area they patrol may include urban areas, lakes, rivers, mountains, deserts, or marine off-shore areas. Wardens frequently work in thick brush or dense woods. Occasionally, they may have to handle wild animals and run the risk
of bites and scratches. They may use patrol boats, off-road vehicles, and scuba-diving equipment. Because they are peace officers, they wear a uniform and carry a weapon.
Fish and Game Wardens work for governmental agencies. Monthly salary ranges for State Fish and Game Wardens cadets are $2,244 to $2,670. Warden salaries range from $2,404 to $3,467 per month. Special agents (wildlife) employed by the federal government begin at GS level 5 (starting at $1,664
per month) and can reach GS level 12 (starting at $3,656 per month).
In other words, cut the guy some slack. He ain't making much.

Bad idea. When they come for you, say you reacted strongly because Officer Jessup was speaking discourteously to a lady of the underage persuasion, which is not taken lightly in Spankyland, where gentility and hospitality are the rule. Everyone who speaks kindly to ladies is welcome in Spankyland, including, of course, animal control personnel. If the person addressing you is a bona fide cop, you might drop the hint that maybe Officer Jessup went into the animal business because he wanted to be a cop but his superiors at the Academy noted that he lacked vital people skills, hint hint. An honorable game warden would track no man to his undeserved hurt and pursue no woman to her tears.

This guy was definitely a county employee and not a state employee. I remember see Santa Clara county on the patch. I am pretty sure he was from Animal Control but I am less sure about that. But no doubt he was a county employee.
He was not armed. And it was a pretty small pickup truck.

A google search of santa clara county's website reveals two separate listings, one for fish and game, and one for animal control, if that is all dispositive, which it isn't. I say, fuck em.
p.s. Spanky, be nice to any fish and game guys you encounter--in addition to being armed, they are the ones that get called out when cougars (mountain lions) terrorize the suburbs. You might even want them on speed dial.

An armed SPCA is a free SPCA.

Damn you for making me look this up.
- A level 1 humane officer is not a peace officer, but may exercise the powers of a peace officer at all places within the
state in order to prevent the perpetration of any act of cruelty upon any animal and to that end may summon to his or her aid any bystander. A level 1 humane officer may use reasonable force
necessary to prevent the perpetration of any act of cruelty upon any animal.
A level 1 humane officer may make arrests for the violation of
any penal law of this state relating to or affecting animals in the
same manner as any peace officer and may also serve search warrants.
Cal. Corp. Code § (i)(1)(A), (B). A "Level 2" humane officer has basically the same powers, but may not carry a firearm.

Another weird thing about this is I live within the City Limits of Palo Alto. Pretty far from the city proper (never see any cops) but still with in the limits. Palo Alto has a pretty hard core animal control group (they killed a couple of cougars near downtown that got just a few people upset). But this guy was from the County.

Col. Jessup
The state guys come around and put the medfly traps on the Apricot trees. They always ask permissiosn before they come on the property. But Jessup just strolled right onto the property and started giving lecutres. There is just no excuse for bad manners.

Though he may harbor secret dreams of doing so, Spanky does not keep or harbor any deer in his property. They are not his pets. They are his friends. He is not mistreating the deer, which are not his pets and which he does not keep nor harbor on his property.
edited to make it make sense

Empire of the Word.
Maybe I should put this on the Politics page, but has anyone read Empire of the Word by Nicholas Ostler? It is the history of the world from the view point of languages. Since languages are the key to national identity, it is quite an interesting read. I just started it but so far good stuff. I saw the guy on CSPAN and he seemed to know what he was talking about.
