opposites?
The Mr. is basically my clone, only larger and hairier. We often complete each others sentences, voice each other's random cross-associations, and we can't play charades with one another because if one of us makes the signal for "book" the other immediately (and correctly) calls out "Kant's Groundwork of the Metaphysics of Morals!" We have completely congruent neuroses that (fortunately) usually kick in at different times. The only significant difference I've been able to suss out between us is that he likes Romantic composers more than Baroque, and I'm the reverse. Oh, and I like bitters and he likes lager. So as far as I'm concerned, the study is correct.
Though I had a lot of fun dating my opposites.

Only if we also give an honorable mention to everyone who has ever appeared on Masterpiece Theater.

Why, in college, when the students in English lit classes were required to read aloud from Shakespeare, did they feel it necessary to affect a British accent? Especially the drama students. What's with that?

The only other I've seen that is nearly as catastrophically bad is Battlefield Earth, which also was hilarious but so long that I actually started scrubbing the floors to avoid having to finish watching the video.

I cracked up when you mentioned Battlefield Earth. Some of my other favorite bad movies:
(1) Waterworld
(2) The Postman
(3) Showgirls
(4) Striptease
(5) Ishtar
(6) Howard Duck
(7) Titanic
(8) G.I Jane
(9) any of the Star Wars movies released after The Empire Strikes Back
(10) any film with Madonna

Picked up the New Pornographers thanks to you, and I do mean thanks to you.

And while we're at it, let's pick on Kathleen Turner for her "you can't tell where the fuck I'm from, but today it sounds like it might be Italy" accent.
Until I saw Body Heat (a movie with one of the best lines of all time), I never understood her allure. She certainly could not have built a career on goodwill generated by Romancing the Stone (the first movie I saw her in).

Perhaps more importantly, e-mail criticizing former employer is protected.
http://www.cnn.com/2003/LAW/07/01/em....ap/index.html
In a 4-3 decision Monday, the California Supreme Court overturned a lower-court injunction barring Kourosh Kenneth Hamidi from sending e-mail to his former colleagues. Santa Clara-based Intel had sought the injunction, arguing that Hamidi was trespassing on its computer servers just as though he were intruding on private property.
"He no more invaded Intel's property than does a protester holding a sign or shouting through a bullhorn outside corporate headquarters, posting a letter through the mail, or telephoning to complain of a corporate practice," Justice Kathryn Werdegar wrote for the in majority.
The majority's reasoning does not give a legal nod to those sending spam, or unsolicited e-mail, en masse, she noted.
Edited to add the important part: She added that Intel's chief concern was the content of his e-mails, which are protected speech.

Did anyone see the SNL skit where they had "Matt Lauer" (done pretty well by one of the newish guys) interviewing Madonna? He asks her if she has any regrets, and she says (of course), "No" (the chick playing Madonna is really good, come to think of it). The following conversation ensues:
Matt: Really? What about Shanghai Surprise?
Madonna: I never saw it.
[other bad movies -- other Madonna justifications]
Matt: What about Swept Away?
Madonna (with an eye-roll and head-toss and peevish sigh): That was a movie that wasn't supposed to be good... And if people just don't understand that, well... [loud sniff and eye roll].
I cannot think of anything she's appeared in that wasn't puke-all-over-yourself awful. (Not that I have seen the entire Madonna canon -- in no small part because of the aforementioned emetic effects.)

I'm fairly sure that's all you need to see. In fact, you're best advised to stop right there.

I did not puke all over myself when I saw "A League of Their Own", but I may have pooped my pants a little bit.

And why, when using those affected British accents, did they feel that Elizabethan royalty probably spoke with the same accent used by uptight twentieth century British twits?
Half the time the royal spouses were imports from Spain or Germany, and to the extent they came from anywhere in those islands, the Tudors and Stuarts had more Scottish than Twit blood.

And why is the hell is a British accent the world standard for classiness, particularly to Americans, when we wailed on their effete little empire? And why does every film set in ancient Rome have its actors affect British accents as if that indicates their high status? Weren't the Brits a bunch of mud-dwelling ignorant barbarians when the Romans busy were conquering half the planet?
