If I ever saw a scarlet king snake I would freak the fuck out. Snakes are my one real phobia (I licked that fear of heights, I think.) A couple of years ago I was in a store in L.A. that sold snakes and lizards, and I could barely handle walking by the snake tanks. The only snakes that didn't frigthen me were the little babies. They're so strangely cute, it's almost mesmerizing.

Since I mentioned L.A. Spanky is sure to find the non-regional nature of my post frightening. Sidd, why don't you hold him till the fear subsides?

When I lived in LA I lived in the Disney cottages in Silverlake (Griffith Park Boulevard near Marshall High School). Every day it was like Mutual of Omaha's wild kingdom. There were Raccons, coyotes, possums and squirrels everywhere. The worst was the skunks. I just gave up trying to keep them out of the house. They were everywhere and it was a loosing battle. After a while I just got used to them. The only person I knew who ever got sprayed was my Parisian neighbor (who unsurprizingly was a total jerk). But I am sure he did something to aggravate the Skunk. There I was living in the middle of LA on a busy street and it was like a bad Lassie episode.

People just stopped posting to it. I asked LessinSF why people post to certain boards at different times and he said that these threads were just like lanes of a freeway in traffic. There is no telling which one will get moving.

That is like my worst nightmare. One of our horses got bit when I was a kid and the poor thing went through hell. There is nothing creepier than that rattling sound. Where was she when she got bit?

She was in her barn, reaching for hay to feed her horses. Luckily my brother was there and was able to take her to the hospital (my mom lives in the middle of nowhere). She rode in the bed of the pickup because she couldn't climb in and she couldn't stand for anyone to touch her to help her in.

You know, that story doesn't help me through my snake phobia.

I've alread seen three water moccassins and two garden snakes this year. I may spend the rest of the summer indoors.

ETA: Some sort of snake got into the vestibule of my sister's apartment yesterday, and she found the doorman standing on the top of his desk shrieking until the maintenance guys could a) find it, b) whack it with a stick, and c) get it out of the building.

She lives in the middle of freaking down town houston. I suggested that maybe it hitched a ride from Mexico on one of the many busses that pass by. She was unimpressed.

No one bothered to find out what kind of snake it was. I hope it wasn't someone's pet.
