At least some one is paying attention.
The one at Target was suitable for a 10' tree. WalMart was only good for 8'. Makes a big difference when you're vacuuming up broken ornaments and Christmas lights. A tree stand built for an 8' tree does not actually support an 8' tree. Lesson learned.

I am not generally helpful like RT, but I have learned that bolt cutters are quite handy for trimming the narrow, too-long bits at the top of a marginally too-tall tree. A circular saw works well on the bottom of the tree, if you're persistent and don't mind covering your saw with pine sap.

The circle saw is also useful for trimming the bottom of your candles to fit them in the menorah, if you have a really big-ass menorah.

I don't know how this is helpful, because I liked all of my 8' trees. And the guy at the lot had the branch cutters and chain saw to trim it up.
It's just that the former stand did not like the 8 foot tree. It believed the tree to be too top-heavy and then rejected the tree - throwing it heave-ho onto the floor. Who knew? Thus the search for a bigger, better tree stand.
