Speaking of...Ellen DeGeneres had an HBO special last weekend, and if they replay it (which of course they will) I highly recommend it. I liked her show, until the last season when it got all weird and uncomfortable watching her trying to relate to her TV parents who were so immediately accepting of her coming out (not what I've seen in real life, but I guess it could happen).
But she was really funny in this special. She put a lot of effort into it and it shows.

I wonder how much influence the other comics and their machinations in the back of the audience have on the voters. An audience member voting on who is the funniest might be influenced by the loud guffaws of professional comedians. Last night, I could hear the loud laughter coming a particular part of the back of the audience. It seems silly to have them in the same room.

Yeah, I noticed that the other comics laughed heartily for Corey at jokes that just weren't THAT funny. I guess that's just an extension of the Real World dynamic of the show.
I agree generally with what OWR said about schtick comics. I just thought that for the time they were on stage, Tere was funnier. I guess that places me in the elite 20% that agree.

Okay, I understand that comics are supposed to be nasty and misanthropic, but damn these people are incredibly unlikable. I think I would quit rather than spend 10 minutes alone with them.
I's a little hard to figure out who is really in the alliance. It looked to be just Dave, Rich, and Corey (who I really cannot stand), and now it also looks as if it is also the black woman whose name I cannot remember (Tess, maybe?) and Ralphie.
As for the competion, how is it possible that Corey beat Tere, no less smoked her so badly? Corey is not funny and her style and routine could have been taped from any comedy central standup in the last 15 years, with tweaks to the cultural references. At least Tere's stuff was interesting.
|
Tere is, um, how can I put this? Oh I know. NOT FUNNY. Cha cha cha. You're right that "generation gap" humor has been done a lot, but she does it pretty well. Similarly, Dave's "my Dad sucked" stuff has been done by every comic at some point, but if your timing and delivery is good, it's funny. Tere is only funny when she's being self-depricating about the new-age stuff. I couldn't believe she made the final 10 in the first place.
You're right though about these comics being cut-throat. It's because this is a legit big chance for one of them to make it big. The stakes are so much higher for them than for, say, Joe Millionaire or Big Brother. Hence it's edgier. Reminds me of my favorite reality show ever, Bands on the Run, but so far we don't have engaged contestants with newborn babies running around banging groupies and stewardesses. Yet.
Oh, and WTF was going on with Dat? Plotting out his "laughs per minute" and other aspects of his routine in both graphically and in linear charts? What a fuckin nut! I can't believe how awesome the show is, and apparently it's doing pretty well.

Had I only known about this, my life may have been much different.

I would think that the incentive would be to keep the weaker comic. I do recall that the only thing that I laughed out loud about during the routines was the "two minute" comment that Corey made early on in her performance.
I'd love to see the contracts that these guys signed. If they don't make it to the end, are they obliged to take a NBC/Comedy Central deal? Cuz this could be a cheap and easy way for one of the other networks to pick up some good talent that already got some national exposure without having to spend too much.
I was heartily amused by the rat disposal process, but the real laugh at loud moment for me in the whole show was Tess on her shopping spree at the end with the stylist. I didn't see the first three episodes, but I think she's good, and I hope to see her down the line.

Yes, yes, yes. I have a Soul Cracker g-string, although I am not wearing it today. I also have seen Flickerstick live and missed Harlow because I think I was sick or something (also, I hated Harlow, but Mr. Kiss wanted to see them). Bring back Bands on the Run.
I caught a portion of Last Comic Standing. It was the portion where spike was crying. WTF? Her argument re "people don't think I'm funny" seemed so absurd given that she was a fricking mess. No one really finds blithering basket cases funny.

Au contraire. All comics are blithering basket cases. I say this with "love" for my mother's "friend" who is a comic.

Guarini to be thrown in the slammer?
As if his movie weren't a greater crime.
ARLINGTON, Texas, July 2 — Justin Guarini was ticketed by Grand Prairie police after witnesses said he almost ran over a young girl with a personal watercraft at Joe Pool Lake, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported.
If convicted of unsafe boat operation, Guarini faces a fine of up to $2,000 and a maximum 180 days in jail, according to a Texas Parks and Wildlife Department Web site.

In this particular contest, entourages are allowed, but backup air bands are not. An air drum contest could be entertaining (live version of Moby Dick, anyone?). An air drum machine contest would be boring.

I think that's what I like the best about this show. These are real comics, or at least people who have put some effort towards becoming real comics. It's something that they've been working hard for, and it's a legitimate chance. I appreciate how much it means to them that much more.
The Dat charts were hysterical. They reminded me of that stupid Matthew Broderick-as-a-stalker movie from a few years ago. I can't believe he fessed up to them in all seriousness. At the very least he should totally incorporate those into his act. Show the audience how OCD he is. I can't believe he doesn't realize that he's sitting on a goldmine of material right there...

Even more amazing is that Vancouver won when, as ESPN reports, Vancouver used "a song by Canadian rock star Bryan Adams . . . featur[ing] images of a bustling Vancouver along with scenes of skiing and other winter sports in Whistler."
Bryan Adams!?! The voters are the buffons they are made out to be.
