I don't think "Hoosiers" was that far off from the real Milan story. Milan did beat a predominantly black team, although in the quarterfinals, not the championship game.

From wiki:

"In the state championship scene, the movie portrays Muncie Central (South Bend Central in the movie; Milan had lost to South Bend Central in the 1953 state semifinals) as a predominantly black team. The real Muncie Central was a predominantly white team with three black members. The movie probably borrowed from the actual history of the 1954 state quarterfinals, in which Milan defeated the segregated Crispus Attucks High School in Indianapolis led by all-time great Oscar Robertson, then a sophomore. In the movie the Muncie/South Bend coach is played by Ray Crowe, who coached Crispus Attucks in 1954 and would lead the team the next year, 1955, to become the first all-black team to win the state championship. The Attucks team, with Crowe as coach and Robertson as floor leader, would repeat as state champions in 1956."

My response was, of course: holy shit, Milan beat Oscar Robertson?
Uh, ok. But I think the focus of the article's was essentially why they chose to make a movie back then about Milan beating an all-black team instead of a movie about the first all-black team to win the state championship, which is the movie they'd make now.

(Don't get me wrong. I love Hoosiers.)

And they made that movie. It was called Glory Road (although it was Texas Western).

The Wire is an incredible show. As for what it says about race, I think if you were to have followed it from the beginning, you would see that it is one of the most racially balanced shows on tv. There are both Black and White heroes and villains. Rich and poor, etc.
I don't deny that. (Although, I didn't see very many white people at all.) I actually used it to demonstrate its authentic voice and how much work black actors are getting. The first episode of the season was gangster-heavy (and I imagine a show called The Wire would be), but it seems to have a broad scope.

What season is it in anyway? I think I want to buy the other seasons. A friend of mine is supposed to have a recurring role in it this season.

But here's when you'll know there's more progress- when about half the white Americans* in the NBA get cut. You (not you Thurgreed) can make the argument that a substantial portion of the crowd is white and they want to see white guys playing, and it is a business selling a product- but that's so sad.

When the Pistons had Jon Berry he was a crowd favorite. He'd come in and hit some open 3s and people would go nuts. Meanwhile, anyone who knows basketball was thinking "oh shit. who is he going to guard?" and the coach knew he couldn't guard anyone so he'd get the hook pretty soon. I know plenty of kids who can hit 3s pretty regularly- that alone shouldn't be a ticket into the NBA. His being on the court was insulting my intelligence.

I was amazed/impressed when Dumars brought in Rasheed because the move cleaned out all white guys, and yet he trusted the fans to realize it made sense. He traded away Bobby Sura to get him, and Bobby actually does(did?) belong on the court. Rasheed coming in took all of Okur's time, so it was all black guys almost all the time- AND I've never once heard anyone complain.

*and I'm not some suck up white apologist, because my kid kicks the shit out of anyone in basketball (if he can just catch one more growth spurt, I'm buying you all lunch with the money Izzo will be saving me)
How thrilled were the Bears jersey people when they realized they had a great white linebacker in Chicago? He wouldn't get half the attention if he were black.

I am not a fan of the Sportsguy. At all. I have tried, but I don't like him.

Apropos of that, it does seem wrong of him to omit mention of Rocky IV, when all Americans, black and white, rich and poor, united against the Commie threat in the form of Dolph Lundgren and Brigitte Nielsen. They killed Apollo, for god's sake.

This is Season 4 I think. And the dvds are definitely a worthwhile investment.

It was also wrong of him not to mention Bring It On. So very wrong.

I can see why they thought immediately of setting her up with you.

Not necessarily. I just don't think he fully appreciates the impact that cheerleading has on race relations.

Back from the meeting

Without having scrolled to read the discussion that led to this, I approve of the new board title.
