Well, a quick search of receiving line etiquette led me to one for military (including White House) functions, and it appears it is considered proper for all guests to go through the receiving line. So yes, a polite decline for a reason ("My apologies, Mr. President, but I cannot attend because I am playing asshole who can't hold his tongue this week.") is better than just ditching on the line once you've enjoyed the food, drink, networking and congratulations on your sucessful big for Congress. But I would also suggest that White House functions are at least as protocol-heavy and formal (moreso) than, like, 99.9% of all weddings.
I defer to your expertise on this one.

And, for the record, I've been to quite formal weddings before, the kind where you have to give the maid of honor a twenty for the Dollar Dance.

no willpower

It seems obvious from this and what Spanky has said recently that the reason we're losing in Iraq is a lack of willpower on the part of the Administration:
  • Though administration officials recognize that increased Iraqi control is likely to be a messy process -- the opposite of a "graceful exit" -- the administration has no appetite for a big troop increase. Every senior official I've talked to recently agrees that the number of U.S. troops in Iraq must be reduced over the next year, even if sectarian violence remains high.

They have no appetite for victory, right Spanky?

If I knew the person well enough to know that about their son, I probably would, yes.

Why the heck not?

They have made a habit of charging their opponents with supporting terrorists and being unAmerican
Truth hurts.

Not all Dems have conceded that they have to play at the level to which Bush has stooped, and many rose above it in the election.
Webb trying to out Allen as Jewish, and Cardin's team referring to Steele as a "tom" were really on the high road.

Did Sundance give an award to a "fake" documentary about the assassination of President Clinton?

If he hadn't asked, the lead story of Pravda...er. the NYT, would be "THE CALLOUS PRESIDENT"

Allen points a gun at his foot, pulls the trigger repeatedly, and you blame Webb? Allen's wounds in that episode were entirely self-inflicted.

I have no problem with Bush asking Webb how is son is doing. It was Bush's reply that makes him an asshole.

To the extent that you think you are noting a consistency in my views, thank you, although I think the two are not entirely related.

eta: Spanky says Presidents lie all the time. Is he wrong?
