This won't pass, though I'd be a bit more worried after the election if the Dems take back the House.

I don't know. It is a bit of a double edged sword. Without a planned withdraw, the insurgents will take credit for whenever we start to pull out, and the longer we leave it as a festering quagmire, the more credible those claims will look. (Of course, they will take credit either way). And I suspect that they are already saying that things will get better if they only make it to X date.

I guess it comes down to whether we think we can make the situation better by leaving troops there. If we can't, then it makes as much sense to plan the withdrawl now as it would to plan it later. Unfortunately, whether we can help is an assessment that it is awefully hard for us to make from here in our comfortable offices (or in my case, in my uncomfortable office).

It looked as though a tooth wouldn't survive that blast, yet his body is intact and they found a whole lot of paper. Isn't paper highly combustible?

Something does not add up, or did I miss something?
We reconstructed the shell of Flight 800 from pieces at the bottom of the sea. You think we have difficulty piecing together the remnants of that house? We probably lost a lot of info in the bombing, but even factoring in that loss, we grabbed a bunch of solid intel.

Now, get those fucking oil spigots flowing, fast.

Chucrchill had just been defeated by Atleee in the first post—war election in Britian adn was fluctuating between being blind drunk and rampaginly angry. At one Goerge and Picasso ended up adjacent to each other and were beseiged by Françoise Gilot to pose for a photto. As he was moving into place for one of the photos, Churchill drunbkenly slipped and fell onto George, who quipped,

"Get the hell off of me you political has-been"

George’s attendant reseated the doddering old leftist, and mumbled an apology to Churchill, at which point Churchill exclaimed,

"Let Atlee try a best two out of three'"

and then he promptly puked on Gilot's Chanel outfit
Who is the leftist in this story?

Well, I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that the Geneva Conventions do not ban assassination (i.e. targeted killing of specific individuals).

Moreover, if you believe that Mr. Zarqawi was the leader of an opposing military force subject to the protection of the appropriate Geneva Conventions, you have a damn hard time saying it was wrong to target him for killing. In a war, or pseudo-war, each side frequently targets the other side's generals.

As I understand it, we killed Zarqawi and 6-7 aides, and Hank mentioned two innocent noncombatants. The last two deaths are very bad--but you put that sort of risk in the balance all the time. And, to make a facile justification, it is Zarqawi's fault for hiding with them.

I can only presume you think we should have tried to swoop in with a couple hundred troops to try to arrest him. Bull. First, fraught with peril and risk of compromise and risk of failure. Second, those soldiers are undfer no more obligation to risk their lives to try to capture Zarqawi alive than a police officer is to hold his fire because the man threatening his life only has a knife, and thecop he is wearing a mesh vest, and he and his partner could maybe wrestle him down.

It was a quick and easy death for Zarqawil he was almost certainly killed instntly by the concussion. They bombed him from so high up he may never have even heard the planes. Perfectly lawful. The right thing to do. Better than he deserved.
It WAS a burn! I knew it. I like the hard hitting, hold-no-punches style of this board. That's how I wanna roll. This is the board for adults.

Skimming your post, I sense that you are attempting to cobble together some technical argument about the applicability of certain Geneva Convention provisions, or some such nonsense. If burying yourself in minutiae helps assuage the tiny lingering guilt you feel in the gleeful celebration of the brutal assassination of another human, then I applaud the anger in your soul.

Oh, and the latest news reports indicate that the end was not so quick. For the bloodthirsty of the board, it appears he may have suffered horribly as his crushed internal organs slowly failed for close to an hour while blood seeped out of his mouth. If I had been there, I would have filled a shot glass with his blood and downed it as he exhaled his last breath. The al-Zarqawtini? Hot drink of the summer?

The radio this morning told me the following:

"Revisualize your life in different colors
Open your eyes, this is a brand new dawn."

Think about it.

Damn! You're right! I see it all differently now.

Give peace a chance, my brothers! Zarqawi gave us suicide bombs, sniper attacks, and the beheading of innocent captives, but he is not truly our enemy. Our enemy is the hatred in the hearts of men.

When faced with this horrific challenge, we must simply turn the other cheek, as the Good Book says. LO, I say it unto thee once again, it is far simpler for a camel to fit though the eye of a needle than for a warrior to enter the Kingdom of Heaven!

No bombs necessary. We should have just given him a pretty little flower . . .

Not me, but I can't be too upset.

We got Delay, we got Libby, we hurt Rove . . . not a bad year! Cheney shot someone in the face. Bush's approval ratings are hanging lower than Madeline Albright's teats (nod to Sebby). To ask more would seem greedy!

P.S. Besides, after Fitzpatrick had thought about it for what, a year, the chance of indictment was looking pretty small. Whatever Rove came up with at the last minute when he went to Fitzpatrick seems to have saved his ass.

Oh, please. Littering your post with cliches about dirty hippies (whom, by the by, I happen to despise) is both unimaginative and unresponsive. Somebody slap me if I stoop to suggesting that you "come in from the cold."

I never said Zarqawi was a good man who did good deeds. I never suggested he was anything other than our enemy. I just questioned the moral authority of our nation to play god, particularly when she is a morbid and bloodthirsty deity.

As for your biblical references, they fly right over my head. I would like to read this Book you reference, but it is unspeakably long and I am still struggling to get though Infinite Jest.

In the 70s, the radio sent me words of wisdom that I shall never forget. Thunder only happens when it's raining.

Think about it.

Actually, the quote is that it is simpler for a camel to fit though the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the Kingdom of Heaven. I know that plays havoc with the Christian right's view of the world, but it IS the word of God, after all.....

I understand what you're trying to say. YOu're saying if we kill because we deem someone "bad" are we not in danger of becoming something others see as "bad." That is a valid concern, albeit you articulated it poorly.

I recommend we kill the bad people quickly and ruthlessly and completely. Then, if some wisenheimer says "is the US bad?" we can say "compare us to people everyone agrees are bad" but they won't be able to because all the bad people (besides us) will be gone, so there will be no point of comparision.

does that help?

Rep. Patrick Kennedy has reached a deal with prosecutors to plead guilty to a charge of driving under the influence of prescription drugs in connection for his middle-of-the-night car crash last month near the U.S. Capitol.
