I would guess that he did this because there are parallels between Stevenson and Obama, though maybe not as many as some people suggested a few months ago, and because an appeal to something Stevenson said is a way to appeal to a shared background with Obama supporters.
"Nixonland" is a land of slander and scare. Since the column points to many things the press has said about Clinton, and none that Obama has said about Clinton, I think it's fair to conclude that his piece is about how the national press is treating the Clintons. He doesn't actually say anything about Obama or the Obama campaign, rather about "Obama supporters," from whom he sees "venom" and who are "happy" about the wrong things.
The obvious point of the piece is that Obama supporters should not be pleased with how the national media has applied "'Clinton rules' — the term a number of observers use for the way pundits and some news organizations treat any action or statement by the Clintons, no matter how innocuous, as proof of evil intent." While the column says nothing about Obama or his campaign, most of the column is about things the press say.

Dude, Slave's take is quite reasonable. I've read the thing and the caveats you note don't undo the general thrust of the piece, particularly considering it in the context of everything else that fat little prick has said about Obama in the past several months.

Why do you think their marriage is a sham?

Because he's stuck his dick in everything the state police could bring him in Arkansas and everyone I know who's spent time with the man has corroborated that yes, "Bubba is a playa." If you want specifics, I can explain in PM. But I'd rather not have to recount dozens of anecdotal references supported by such a waterfall of known empirical evidence.
The guy's fucked, all but admittedly, at least a dozen women other than his wife. She's either the most forgiving woman who ever lived or the only person alive without an internet connection or television reception between 1995 and 2000.

Their scruples aside, what's really odd to me about this episode is that people are so ready to hear the Clintons trashed like this that no one notices that it makes absolutely no sense to say that Hillary was pimping Chelsea. If you said something like this about any other candidate, it would seem nuts. The only reason it seems to ring true to some people (hi S_A_M ) is because there's nothing Hillary can do that can't be painted as conniving and unscrupled if you just try.
I'm no fan of Hillary, but she gets a bum rap.

MSNBC has been comical and unprofessional throughout this season. Chris Matthews clearly wants to bear Obama's love-child, and firmly believes that Hillary is the anti-Christ. I'm not sure why they've decided to abandon any pretense of fair or balanced journalism, but it's gotten out of hand.

Strangely enough, your assessment of the fat little prick's general thrust doesn't change my reading of what he actually said. YMMV.

That would make him unfaithful. It doesn't make their marriage a sham.

And while I agree the comments seemed only mildly inappropriate to me, I think the offensive part was the comparison of Chelsea to a whore, not so much Mommy to a pimp.

The Clinton's have always been very protective of Chelsea.
I'm betting her current coming out was her idea, and, after all, she is grown up now. But if you get between a Mama Bear and her Cub, you shouldn't be surprised when she bites.

I've never really watched MSNBC until recently, but based on what I've seen this election cycle, point taken.

Thanks for the image. Nothing like imagining Paul Krugman having sex.
I trust this is line with what John saw before he penned Revelations.

Those were your words. Perhaps your subconscious is trying to tell you something?

Hillary, Rockin' Out.
As Ana Marie Cox aptly put it, it really is hard to tell whether this is an ad for young people, or simply an old person's idea of an ad for young people.
I swear, we should start a political ad shop. We could do crap that's at least this good. With the stupendous fees they collect, I bet we could get at least $5-$10M of Clintons' money before it's all gone.
