death to drivers who hit cyclists

20 cyclists injured in St Petersburg, Florida

A motorist that ploughed into a Sunday morning bunch ride in St Petersburg, Florida has injured 20 cyclists, 14 of whom were hospitalised. The driver, Joseph D. Pastore (60), blamed "water in his eyes" for the accident, which occurred at 8:40 a.m. on 30th Avenue N just west of 53rd Street. The bunch contained as many as 40 riders, most of whom were part of the St. Petersburg Bike Club or the St. Pete Mad Dog Triathlon Club.

I'm with you, E/O. Last week here in Stumptown an extremely drunk guy driving without a license (it had been revoked for previous bad behavior, including multiple DUIs) plowed into a group of cyclists while traveling at a high rate of speed (like, 70, on city streets). Of four, he managed to miss one. Two were thrown, one into the back of an SUV hard enough to do a couple grand worth of damage; he died. The other was thrown 395 feet while her bike was dragged under the van; she also died. The third survived with spinal and leg fractures.

The guy wouldn't have even stopped, but a cop a block away heard the crash and probably saw a body go flying by.

I think the guy should probably be locked up permanently.

I think Alison's story with her ex promises to be the most entertaining. Jun looks like she's going to be all sorts of fun. The older folks are going to be in trouble if the "vote off the ex" strategy falls apart. Oh, and when Erika was choosing that boyfriend, I think she shoulda kept on looking.

I predict the "vote off the ex" strategy lasts about until, um, now.

Not to defend this guy, but he probably is just an idiot old driver who will hit kids and other cars with impunity.

the ones that get me, and they seem to inhabit the south in higher numbers, are the beer can chucking drivers who cut you off, swerve into you, throw things at you, flip you the bird, and so on. Is my bike in the breakdown lane that hard to avoid?

Except for bike messengers - they have a friggin' death wish and I could care less if cars hit em. Especially given the number of times they've nearly hit me while I was walking through crosswalks.

Is it just me, or can Dana look halfway decent in the camera sometimes, and yet at other times look kinda like Ralph Macchio with long hair?? I think Robert should start praying for immunity NOW. I think Jun is gonna turn out to be more bark than bite. And how soon until Michelle and David start sleeping together with their "newly rekindled" romance??

A witness claimed he accelerated and aimed for them. St. Pete has really terrific bike routes, so people from all over Florida head there to ride on their rails-to-trails routes (including MomOdds -- who drives faaaaaar from her home weekly to ride in relative safety from the old folks who cannot see over their steering wheels.)

Down here in Texas, we lose a few cyclists a year in hit and run accidents. People seem to pay a little bit more attention in Austin, since Lance and other pro cyclists live and train here. No one wants to be the dumbass who kills our local hero.

You are so right.

I was hoping that they would have some exes who ended well. Allison looked like an emotional mess before her ex showed up, so she should hope she gets voted out (or leaves) soon.

I don't think I can make that, but let me know how the game goes... If I get home early I'll check to see if it is still on. I am going out with the girls tonight (birthday celebration).

Every time I hear about accidents like this, I can't help but think of fondly an incident from a couple of years ago in DC where a cyclist was hit by a car, pulled out a gun, and shot the driver.

After the incident, cars seemed to be a little less agressive for about 6 months or so.

Post-Lawrence legal landscape

Interesting article in today's NY Times about Loren Loomis, a former lieutenant colonel who in 1997 was discharged from the Army "just one week shy of the 20-year career mark that would have entitled him to full retirement benefits after his home was burned and a firefighter found a videotape of him engaging in sex with other men."

In light of Lawrence, he is suing to have his discharge reversed and his record corrected.

This man was wounded in the Vietnam War, in which he won two Bronze Stars and a Purple Heart. The fire was started by an Army private who said was trying to destroy nude pictures he had posed for with Mr. Loomis.

Anybody know anything about military law and what his chances are? I hope he wins -- but my guess is his case won't get far. I'm wondering how a decision like Lawrence would inform the Uniform Code of Military Justice, which makes sodomy a court-martial offense, as well as how a subsequent change in constitutional law would alter a 1997 decision that affected this man's rights.
