An Orange You Can't Refuse

Has anyone else noticed that in Godfather and Godfather II there is a recurring theme of oranges (the fruit, not the color) whenever death or violence is near? I noticed it a while ago, and now, every time I see the movie (which is often, as my remote control will not permit me to pass it up whenever it's on) I notice another instance.

To wit: last night, I noticed (for the first time) that during the dinner with Tom Hagan and the movie producer, the centerpiece on the table is a bowl of oranges!

Other examples: when Salozzo attempts the hit on Don Vito, Vito is examining oranges (when he falls down, the oranges are spilled); when Don Vito is playing in the garden immediately prior to his death, he's eating an orange (and scares his grandson when he puts the rind in his mouth to make a funny face).

When Johnny Ola (sp?) comes to visit Michael in Tahoe on behalf of Hyman Roth, he brings him an orange; when Michael, Tom and Rocco (?) are trying to figure out how to get to Frankie Pentangeli, Michael is eating an orange. And I think that just prior to Fanucci's death (by the hand of the young Don Vito), Fanucci (La Mano Negra!) is also buying oranges -- but I can't remember that as clearly, and may be making that up.

So, what's it all about [Alfie]?

Now, if this is really obvious, and something everyone already knows about, please don't burst my bubble -- I thought myself quite the movie expert when I noticed this all by my lonesome!

I'm wondering how a decision like Lawrence would inform the Uniform Code of Military Justice, which makes sodomy a court-martial offense, as well as how a subsequent change in constitutional law would alter a 1997 decision that affected this man's rights.
I thought there was some extraordinary deference given to military decisions to discriminate based on the national security issue?

I am always blown away by folks who are treated like second-class citizens in this country and still love it enough to risk their lives to defend it. If anything, the military should be fawning all over citizens that selfless.

You're apparently not the only one:

Edited to add:
Did a Google search, and there is much discussion of the symbolic use of oranges in the Trilogy - all relating to impending death.

And all along I thought you just wear what you sew.

If you plow but never reap, what do you eat? They never would have lived to see Laura marry Alonzo.

The Decline and Fall of The Y Chromosome.

My favorite chick columnist, Maureen Dowd (apropos of nothing, does anyone know if she really looks like this?)
(kind of a Jackie O with an edge thing working for her there) has a theory as to why Penske wears Urban Decay polish on his toes (spree: it's the New York Fricken Times, for pete's sake).

From her column today:
Quote:
The Y chromosome, "a mere remnant of its once mighty structure," is worried about size. "Men are wilting away," Dr. Jones writes. "From sperm count to social status and from fertilization to death, as civilization advances, those who bear Y chromosomes are in relative decline." Perhaps that's why men are adapting, becoming more passive and turning into "metrosexuals," the new term for straight men who are feminized, with a taste for facials, grooming products and home design.

This was also the subject of debate in the FB-underrated Roger Dodger.

Edited to add:

I think the real reason behind the increase in men like Penske and Slave and the Flower living their lives as male fashionistas is that they can.

It's just more socially acceptable for men not in a hair band to wear leather pants and get facials. There are more products available than there used to be, and even the manliest men I know get pedicures and use night cream and eye cream. How do I know? They ask for product recs.

my underwear

One reason I'm in a good mood today is that I'm wearing some really terrific underwear. I'm kind of a connosseur of inexpensive cotton thong underwear and I think I really struck gold with this pair. They are white and have "Chick's Rule" in sparkly purple writing across the front. It's the kind of convergence of incorrect punctuation and superior comfort so often sought after in underwear and so rarely found. Well worth the 30 canadian dollars I shelled out for six pairs.

death to drivers who hit cyclists

Every time I hear about accidents like this, I can't help but think of fondly an incident from a couple of years ago in DC where a cyclist was hit by a car, pulled out a gun, and shot the driver.

After the incident, cars seemed to be a little less agressive for about 6 months or so.
The only thing that made that justified was that it was a taxi driver, and given their driving skills in DC, chances are the messenger was actually in the right for once.

That said, with most of the messengers I want to do the Breaking Away thing, and stick a pump in their spokes. THe only thing worse than the bike messengers are the moped messengers, who apparently never learned that motorized vehicles are not allowed on sidewalks. Where's paigow to poke them with an umbrella?

It's just a thrilling stage.
