The apparent intention being to create bad traffic by forcing everyone to keep circling the airport. Then we'll all say, fuck it, the next person who flies in is taking a cab to my house.

I get this a lot. If I know the young person I spend some time thinking about whether that person has a personality that fits being a lawyer. Of course there are many personality types but I find there are certain traits that need to be there, especially in a litigator.
When I speak with the person, if I feel her or she has those traits I discuss that with em. I also discuss the pros and cons of the practice. The fact it isn't like it seems on law and order or la law, that much of it is drudgery. I always talk with them about different options. I ask them why they think they want to go to law school, what they expect out of it, what they hope to accomplish with their careers.
If after talking with the person I think it is a very bad idea that he or she go to law school, I have no problem telling them directly that I think this. And I always tell the person who asks me to talk to the young person that I will not hesitate to tell them this if it looks to me like he or she wants to go for the wrong reason or it becomes clear to me that it would be a big mistake. I make sure they understand this and tell them if they don't want the risk that someone will say this to their child, then they best ask someone else to discuss it with them. If on the other hand I know the child and think he or she will fit, obviously, that warning is not needed.

What traits would those be? Can you tolerate endless hours of reading and highlighting, losing your social life, in debt for the better part of the rest of it, lack of pigmentation due to being stuck indoors on beautiful days, chronic addiction to alcohol and caffeine? She (I think it's his daughter) just kind of decided that she wanted to do this. I really don't want to discourage her if she really really wants to do this. I'm hoping that the LSAT/application process discourages her. I don't want to be the one who gets blamed later (I could have been a lawyer and YOU talked me out of it).
What I would like to know is how deeply to go into the economy, job prospects (since I don't know what they are) and pay. Is that appropriate, or should I just tell her the process and how much is sucks to be in law school and study for the bar?

I think that's the way it should always be. The pain heaped on the person picking you up isn't worth the convenience to the person being picked up.
In NYC, there really is a big difference. When the cops aren't around to tell the cabs and limos to keep it moving, traffic is backed up for a mile. They don't understand the concept of pulling to the side to let people out. They just stop wherever they please (or they don't pull up close behind someone who is unloading or wait for someone near the curb or double parked to move, so they stop in the third lane) and everyone behind them is fucked.
Their behavior at airports fits with my "cabbies are scum" theory.

I think it is appropriate to be honest, but at the same time it sounds like this girl hasn't given it too much thought and it is difficult to have a terribly serious conversation with someone who has just decided to go to law school.
You might mention some of the difficulties people are having, a little bit perhaps on the cycle of layoffs that seems to have started in the early 90s and is now repeating itself. Let her know that law school isn't easy and neither is the bar. I'd advise her to begin the process of applying, but also, ask her to think about what it is she expects once she has completed the education. What she sees herself doing. Get her to think a little more about the fact that this is a serious choice, and very different from college.

Of Match Game celebrities I think Paigow is more like Brett than like Joanne anyway. Joanne was just goofy and high pitched. Brett was worldlier, saltier, and quicker-witted. Yes, that's meant as a compliment.

They need a big holding pen for taxis, as they have in DC. They release them a few at a time, as the taxi queue grows. They need something similar for cars. A big waiting lot, just offsite, where passengers can call their pick-ups and say "I'm here; come get me" Which is what I do anyway these days--just call me when you arrive; I'll be parked 3 minutes away. I just have to find some spot to wait in.

I was wondering when someone would ask about that. It's my 4th avatar today.
It's actually "The Famous Bret Boone Angel Picture." see it here
If you google, you will see various versions of it. And since Bret is going to the All Star Game this year, I thought I'd add the pic and not change the tag line. Bret has many many obsessive chick fans who obessively post websites about him. Originally it was claimed to be him (he's got a really hot bod), but he says it's not - there's too much body hair. Anyway, obsessive chick admits to too much free time and PhotoShop alteration. But it's been around the web for awhile.

Dilemma
I think it's smart to talk to her realistically about what it means to practice law, since that's what she wants to know.
Talk about what a work week is like, the different types of jobs people can have with a law degree, the debt load, the income potential.
Don't dissuade her. Just let her know what it feels like to go to law school and to be a lawyer.

Fashionably late lunch.
Apro...uh, I just thought that I would point out that a good roast beef sandwich really is tastier when one uses real horseradish.
Carry on.

If we only warn about the difficulties of law school and the bar, we encourage people to waste three years for what's behind Door No. 2.
I answered a similar question by a college student on my local FL board. If you agree with any of that post, feel free to use it as your own. I'm not into plagiarism witch hunts.
