One of my brother's old boyfriends took him to New Orleans for Halloween a few years ago, and apparently he (the boyfriend, not my brother, who went as the Braveheart guy that year) had a similar tighty whitie with wings costume. Having no where to put it, the boyfriend gave my brother his wallet to hold for the evening, and they proceeded to get exceedingly drunk at a series of parties. Inevitably, they got separated and my brother assumed that he'd meet up with boyfriend at the hotel eventually. Boyfriend forgot where the hotel was and spent several early morning hours wandering around the streets New Orleans in a pair of tighty whities and some wings looking for something familiar. They broke up soon thereafter.

And she definitely had the cool sunglasses. Worn inside. If I hadnt quit smoking, I woud say thats me in thirty years. Complete with the ascotted homosexual sidekick. Plus, she married Jack Klugman who I always found inexclicably sexy .

You might mention some of the difficulties people are having, a little bit perhaps on the cycle of layoffs that seems to have started in the early 90s and is now repeating itself. Let her know that law school isn't easy and neither is the bar. I'd advise her to begin the process of applying, but also, ask her to think about what it is she expects once she has completed the education. What she sees herself doing. Get her to think a little more about the fact that this is a serious choice, and very different from college.
|
Thanks, this is really helpful. I know that I thought about law school a lot before I actually began the application process. But once I started I was going to finish even though mom tried to talk me out of it. I'll try to figure out how seriously she wants to go - of if it's just the thought of lots of $$ (people think we make lots of $$ for some reason - forgetting that $800/month student loan).

It's actually "The Famous Bret Boone Angel Picture." see it here
If you google, you will see various versions of it. And since Bret is going to the All Star Game this year, I thought I'd add the pic and not change the tag line. Bret has many many obsessive chick fans who obessively post websites about him. Originally it was claimed to be him (he's got a really hot bod), but he says it's not - there's too much body hair. Anyway, obsessive chick admits to too much free time and PhotoShop alteration. But it's been around the web for awhile.

Somewhat apropos, but I have NO desire to bring back the steroid discussion: People may accuse McGwire, Bonds and Sosa of 'roids, but Bret Boone is the guy who I will bet the farm is juicing. His HR numbers and size increased impossibly a few years back. He made the skinny Sosa/Bonds to huge Sosa/Bonds transition seem mild.

Talk about what a work week is like, the different types of jobs people can have with a law degree, the debt load, the income potential.
Don't dissuade her. Just let her know what it feels like to go to law school and to be a lawyer.

I've had three people come to me in the last two years to ask seriously about it. One is in law school and hates it, one just took the LSATS, and the other (I think) has decided not to go.
I've generally talked about my day and made sure that they know what to expect. I've also explained what law school was like for me, and what I liked and didn't like.
I'm pretty sure that my forwarding that Onion article about the 23 year old mail room guy in BigLaw and the accompanying discussion on the GA boards that convinced the guy who decided not to go.

I wouldn't presume to argue with you. The whole thing started when I posted (at the old place? who knows) about a dream I had in which I spent the afternoon with paigow at the bar of a snowed-in airport, and she looked (in my dream) like a young Joanne Worley.
At least I think that it was Joanne Worley. Now I am trying to find a picture of Ms. Worley circa 1973-74 to make sure that she is who I saw on the Game Show Network and is therefore who paigow looked like.

Aw, you just think that cuz they live(d) in Fairfield County.
Edited to add that I know this factoid because I have a college friend who was a childhood pal of one of their kids.

Unless she has a benefactor who will pay, I would emphasize the debt burden. Other people she talks to will likely treat that as an afterthought, reasoning that "educational debt is good debt" and "as a lawyer your earning potential will be so much greater." Very few people will say before she goes to law school that both the debt and the earning potential will seriously limit her freedom, but as we all know she'll find plenty of people to commiserate about that reality after she graduates. And I venture that nobody will talk about opportunity costs -- not just in terms of lost earnings while in law school, but lost time to explore other careers, make other contacts, be young, have fun, go on reality shows.
Lots of us go to law school because we don't want to have to "struggle" professionally -- and by struggle, I mean endure low pay, work one's way up, and make one's own path. We just trade that uncertain struggle for this allegedly more certain and secure one.
If it were me, I would take the "this is your face on drugs" picture series that we were given a link to yesterday, and change the captions to say "this is your face after 10 years in law.*"
"*Assuming you don't have a good dermatologist and plastic surgeon, which in 10 years you will easily be able to afford as your loans will finally be paid off."
That said, I have tried and failed to talk people out of going to law school. Prospective law students are a stubborn fucking bunch.

"Alas," said the mouse, "the world is growing smaller every day. At the beginning it was so big that I was afraid, I kept running and running, and I was glad when at last I saw walls far away to the right and left, but these long walls have narrowed so quickly that I am in the last chamber already, and there in the corner stands the trap that I must run into," "You only need to change your direction," said the cat, and ate it up.

You should report to us on Paradise Hotel. I have never seen it, so what's the deal with the show.

Is it as exciting the second time around? (I'm watching my tape of the coverage).
BTW, I watched the running of the bulls coverage the other night. One host was Brett Haber, a noted third-rate sportscaster. Another was some Jay guy who I'd never heard of. His sole apparent contribution is that he's been the the Festival of St. Fermin 9 times. He's never run with the bulls, however, which kind of robs him of any inside knowledge. Although he's happy to tell you what an awesome party the whole thing is.
Note to paigow: think Masshole to picture this guy.
