The latter. I do defer to native New Yorkers when I'm in New York, but I'd never associate the spelling with their pronunciation outside of the city.

I'm glad you said you defer to the natives b/c it really pisses me off when people visit an area and then start telling all the natives that they are pronouncing the name of their town/street wrong. It's their freaking town -- they can pronounce it however the hell they want and it's pretentious to act like you are correct just b/c you are aware that it is pronounced differently in other parts of the world.

I went to law school close to where I grew up and it totally pissed me off when all the Yankees came down and started trying to correct my pronunciation of local towns. And when I explained to them that my pronunciation was how the people who lived there pronounced it, they felt no compunction in telling me that the locals were wrong. These freaking morons seriously thought that if they walked around "correctly" pronouncing the name of the town for a few years while they were in school, all of the locals would bow down and thank them for bringing enlightenment and showing them the way.

Can you tell that I feel strongly about this?
