But you'll watch the Sopornos and think all Eye Talians are like that.

Not all Italians are "Guidos" my husband is Italian and is like the Anti-Guido. No Joisy accent. No gel. Patagonia. more LL Bean than Aeropostale. no track suit. No "youse guys" Just because someone is Italian does not mean he's instantly a guido or tacky. or slick or slimy.

I disagree. All Italians are the same, just like the apartments of all gay men are decorated identically.

didn't Atticus say that guys who like asian women are fags? Maybe gay Italians dress like she says and straight ones dress like Sebby says.

Which are the ones who get married to chicks who list the brand names of what they wear? That is classy.
I mean, if you can't distill a person down to what brand of clothing he wears, what has the world come to?

I get lots of my casual clothes from Goodwill. What brands should I be looking for?

That depends upon what kind of person you are.

I have a spouse, kids and a career, so I'm not a bitter person. Sometimes when I'm watching football and they interview the players in the locker room with only towels on, my tummy feels funny.
Is that enough to work with?

The fact is, it is ok for the group which is the target of a racist/ethnic slur to use that word. They are "qualified" uniquely to do so. And I think, as blacks have demonstrated by using the word at issue here, such usage defangs the word, and makes white who use it earnestly look like rubes and redneck jackasses.
When I was a kid, hearing an n-bomb was a big deal. It was a fucking serious insult. Now, when a white person uses it as an actual insult, people look at him like's some uneducated cretin. It's a badge of ignorance.* By using it so much, and taking away its taboo, blacks have destroyed any "bite" left in the word.
I run into some fairly racist/ethnically bigoted people on a regular basis here in flyover land and they don't even use the word anymore. They instead make opaque references to whatever group they're deriding, but never directly describe the group. Maybe I just see a smarter class of bigot.
*In many ways.

This is probably messed up, but I remember seeing the movie Bad Boys (the Sean Penn one, not the Will Smith one) in high school and feeling a weird ethic pride upon hearing the slur "Mick." Until then, I didn't think we Irish even rated a slur.
The only problem is, it's hard to take a slur seriously when it's used as an adjective on every third word in "Grey's Anatomy."

That must be a New York thing. In California we distill people down to the kind of automobile they drive.

He uses it because I use it. Its use was not warranted in this instance.

Racism and prejudice is a fact of life in every human community in the world. People use ethnic, racial and religious differences to create subclasses in every country of the world. When I lived in Japan, when you tried to rent a house they would list which races were allowed to rent a certain place in the newspaper. At certain night clubs they would have a sign on the wall which listed which nationalities they would let in. Unlike most countries of the world, in the US we try and do something about these problems.
A black person in the United States has much less racial barriers to deal with than a Masai tribesman almost anywhere in southern or eastern Africa. In the African American community in the United States, lite skinned African American denigrate and hamper the progess of the dark skinned African Americans.
What that Kramer idiot did should ruin his career. What he did should not be tolerated from a person of any ethnic persuasion to any other person of any ethnic persuasion. When you give a certain ethnic group a pass, you are really telling the whole community that you are not serious about trying to deal with the problem.
The problem is not four hundred years of racial prejudice towards African Americans, the problem is the inclination of humans towards tribalism. The goal is to make this country a pure meritocracy (obviously unachievable but it is the pursuit of that goal that counts). No deviations from that goal should be tolerated because of some group's past victim status.
