Really, Hank? Was that necessary?

Be detailed.
Not sure how serious you are, but it's a dramedy on FX (basic cable) produced by Denis Leary about firefighters in TCOTU. The explicitness of the sex scenes rivals "Sex and the City," and the language is only slightly scaled back from that. (Not quite Samatha, but dirtier than Miranda and Charlotte put together.) It's a triumph of after-dark basic cable.

It's funny in an acid sort of way, and occasionally maudlin, but the characters are about 200% more complex than anything on the networks. So it's basically "Six Feet Under" for people who refuse to pay for HBO.

BTW, anyone else notice how there's a funny sort of vibe where each show has an homage to a prior TV hit? Like the plotline with Danny being unable to remember that cougar's name, culminating in "they're real and they're spectacular" --- that one was obvious. My wife has a strong suspicion that the Venus Butterfly reference is an homage to "LA Law" --- that killer sex position that no one could talk about but everyone hinted around because it was NBC and it was 1986. The joke being that you can now tune in to FX in 2004 to find out exactly what the storied Venus Butterfly is.

Oh, shush.

On another note, I found the beginning of the Surreal Life 3 hard to watch, especially compared to the beautiful train wreck that was season 2. They could have definitely skipped Charo.

Maybe they can improve it by showing some footage of what Flavor Flav was like when he was a junkie.

Just look at this ratio:

Look, I'm all with you on the Halle is hot as hell bit, and saying Beckinsale has the hottest face possible was dead wrong, but Halle is not the very hottest of all time. She's waaay up there, but not at the very top. I feel the same way about your other favorite - Kidman (I think it was you who tore me a new ass for saying I didn't think much of her). She's beautiful, but not impossibly hot. I reserve the top slots for supermodels such as Heidi, carol Alt, the little Latin chick from the Vic Secret catalogue, etc. But I will give you that Halle is tops among actresses.

This little latin chick (Adriana Lima):

Or this one (Alessandra Ambrosio)?

I'm not going to argue back and forth about her being the hottest woman ever. Beauty ideals are quite obviously completely subjective. Whenever I post her photo, I'm not trying to convince you or anyone else that she's the best. But saying so and then posting a dozen photos of her is fun and I don't think you'll ever object.

Not me. I often tear you a new asshole, but have never done so in praise of Kidman. She has her moments, but I would never her put her on a favorites list.

Fuck supermodels (I wonder how often that will be quoted). Most supermodels are too skinny. There's no argument that many of them are very striking. But they're glorified hangers. I think supermodels are overrated. Hot, but worshipped because they're models. If we're going to be shallow, let's be shallow. I don't give a shit that you get paid to look good. All I care about is if you look good to me.

I haven't been there in years, but they still advertise their shows in the CityPaper, so they appear to still be around.

Putting the "motherfucker" in MNF

So, I'm watching the game last night and we're inside the final three minutes. Great game. Very exciting. The Colts are about to take the lead when James fumbles on the one yard line, turning the ball over.

Now, I'm used to John Madden making no sense. He sounds like a stroke victim who's had one too many drinks most of the time. But after James fumbles he says, "That was a flip-flop." Al Michaels jumps in with, "Well, we're in the right state for it." (The Patriots were at home.)

Did anyone else catch this? What the fuck? Since when did football games become the proper forum for sportscasters to air their personal political views? Madden's comment on its own makes absolutely no sense, so it seems pretty clear to me that Madden and Michaels set this up before the game so they could slip that in at a point when the most people would be watching. Unbelievable.

I can't wait to hear Slave's rant on the proper forum for political commentary since my ears have finally stopped bleeding from his tirade over Moore at the Oscars.

How about equal time? When they interview one of the athletes who has no chance at articulating a coherent thought, Michaels can say, "Was that a Bushism?"

In the 1980 election, at a debate, Carter said that he asked his daughter Amy what she feared most, and she told him the bomb, and he used this as an example of why he wanted to eliminate them. It was widely panned (unfairly) as a stupid place for him to be getting information to make policy decisions. Whatever.
A few weeks later on MNF, someone (Staubach?) is asked what the one team fears about the other "The bomb Howard." But he did it in a way that was clear he menat it as a snide comment on ole Jimmy.
Maybe football announcers are mostly republicans. You guys still have the network news announcers.

I would have thought you have gone for a "Bush" being when a team tries to score at the end of the half, when maybe they should have just stalled, and then they get burned by the other team. You know, an ill-advanced offensive series.

Equal time? That one comment means that they're only skewed the other way 98% of the time.

(Slave's gone, so I have to fill in. Sorry.)

They can all be overt Republicans as long as they promise to lock Madden in his giant bus. Never to be seen or heard again. Forever.

He's worse than post-stroke Harry Caray, who was at least still amusing but never was completely fucking insane like Madden.

Yeah. Most of the sports events I watch are filled with pro-Kerry quips.
