 | Good point. I'll wear the "kiss me, I'm a lawyer" shirt and I'll bring the "wet t-shirt judge, show your tits here" for fringey. |

Munich, Salzburg, Vienna and possibly the Italian Riviera

Setting up a trip in September for two weeks.
Does anyone have any hotel recommendations, must-sees, must-dos, must-dont sees, must-don't dos, etc.?

I prefer to travel Europe via train but have been told that renting a car may be better for this trip. Suggestions?

Some people discussed Venice, but I really don't have much desire to go there.

Edited to add that I guess I could just go to Cancun for spring break instead...

 | Munich: Old town (duh), consider BMW factory tour (English on Fridays, 3-4 hours).

On way to Salzburg (if by car): Berchtesgaden and the Konigsee.

Salzburg--not much beyond the entire old town, unless you take a car trip into the hills.

PM me for the (potentially outable) hotels we stayed in. |

 | A friend of mine did a trip to Prague, Budapest and Vienna over New Years, and he said that Budapest was the best and Vienna was the worst. He (a naturalized American citizen from Egypt) and his boyfriend (corn-fed Midwestern guy) got a lot of grief from people in Vienna regarding the US involvment in the war. They said that of the three cities, they liked Vienna the least. People were much less friendly than the other two cities, and in general they didn't have a very good there.

 | That's too bad. Last night I spoke to someone who was in Vienna in September and didn't have any problems. They love Vienna though. And they've been there 5x in the past 4 years. Also, they disliked Budapest. Complete opposite. Anyway, thanks for the advice.

 | Dunno if it's any good, but yahoo travel has a lot of last-minute stuff.

And Continental sends me last minute travel info every week. The link is http://www.continental.com/specials/...ls/default.asp If there's a hub near you, I'd check out that airline's specials.

 | My understanding is the best deals to be had are essentially at the docks when the cruise is leaving. Which doesn't help you much, of course. Cruise pricing is even more wacky that airline pricing, because not only is each empty cabin when the ship sails a loss of revenue for that cabin, it also loses all the alcohol sales. From what I understand, cruise lines are willing almost to give away the cabins right before they sail, at least if you're not mormon.

So, for the landlocked, you might try calling a couple of cruise companies to find out what's available and what's cheap. See if you can negotiate--they may well have something to sell you. |

planning annual trip there and this time the dart landed on the big island. any suggestions for places to stay welcome. I will later be seeking advice on things to do (other than go see the lava, obviously). Trip is far off, but finally close enough that hotels are offering their rates for that time period.
initial favorite is Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel. I understand it neighbors Mauna Kea but is a little cheaper. how's that area? sounds sort of secluded, with fewer kids than Hilton or Marriott. fewer kids is good in my book.

 | We had a nice stay at the Inn at Volcano , but that's useful only if you're staying over near the volcano for a day or two. We were disappointed by our dinner at the Kilauea Lodge , however, although it had come highly recommended. YMMV.

As for seeing the volcano, (well, lava), I would strongly recommend two things. 1) stay near the volcano at least one night, which will a) allow you not to do a really long drive each direction and b) allow you to go see the lava at night, which is at least 100 times more interesting. 2) If the lava is flowing into the water, get spendy and get a boat or copter charter. You are not likely to be able to see it from land. |

Anyone have a recommendation for a good spot for a summer vacation with kids, within about 8 hours drive from Boston?
We have had a place we go pretty regularly, but are looking to do something new this year. Anything that involves horses, hiking, and lots of people waiting on us is particularly welcome.

 | Ever spent any time in the Adirondacks? Lake George is pretty touristy (but with lots of good summer stuff to do). North of there is just good ole nature. I can't tell you anything about it in the last 15 years or so, but many summer trips up there when I was growing up... |
