Continuation of my saga from a long time ago (spring 2001)

I just think that it's PC as hell for everyone else to jump him without any acknowledgement that the JJLC shit could be (and, as it turns out, was) very offensive to someone else. If you go back and read those particular posts and try to imagine the viewpoint of some true believer, you have to realize that, even though the popular stereotype of the fundamentalist christians is fun and all, it's not true for most, and it's offensive. We can't just be careful to avoid offending popular groups. (Oh, lord, I said that Jews were popular. Somebody's gonna be pissed.)

I dont get it. Jesus said he made the joke bc Jesus was a Jew in response to "are you roman catholic" and then made the footloose comment which was clearly facetious if not that funny. What exactly was so offensive? The fact that Virus misconstrued the joke does not mean that its true intent was offensive. its Virus' fault for not getting it and then responding with a racial slur that sounded explosive from my screen.

That's your read because you felt that you were not part of the targeted group. I do go to Church - once a month - and do have some religious beliefs. However, I am quite annoyed by the commonly held opinion that anybody who does go to church or suggests the usage of a pastor is in the same class as a the ultra-Rightists mentioned above. I don't like them, and do not appreciate being lumped together with them. JJLC's comments and everybody else's tacit acceptance of it underscores the prevalence of the issue.
Now when I go out and reply in a manner that draws attention to the issue, as was done, although not in the best of ways, the response was immediate and overwhelming.
Whether inferred or overt, comments can and do offend a particular class.

See, that's what I get for skipping straight to the most recent unread post -- I never saw the "hipper than thou" thing before. No, its good (not that my opinion counts for more than the pile of dogcrap that it normally is). I just thought that "Once again from your intellectual, moral, social and emotional superior" kinda screamed FB in a weird way.

I so did not get that from the Jesus thing. And the absurd thing is that you were upset bc as a church goer you did not want to be lumped in with the Footloose set, which you assumed is what was being done? (PLF, is this irony?) And now I know that you also for anti=pastor as well as anti= jew. also paranoid and maybe not too quick.

I understood what he was trying to do. "You were stereotyping, so I'll take it one step further."

I don't think it's all that PC. I think you're ignoring both posters' tone. I think JJLC's tone wasn't even close to serious (and I had to click them all to take Jesus off mute (there's a board motto if I've ever heard one) to go back and read them). Making fun of a belief system (whether you say, "people who believe everything they read in the Bible are wingnuts" or "people who think they have been reincarnated are wackadoo") is very much different from calling someone a kike. Now, yez, it's true that someone who is deeply religious will be offended by this; and that is not in question. But the fact that the knee jerk reaction to someone poking fun of your beliefs is to label them with a slur is problematic.
What I find more interesting is that you didn't say anything about JJLC's offensive posts (or the kike thing) until you saw a PC issue to jump on. Advocating an open market of ideas is one thing, but this just seems strange to me.

the more you attempt to explain your actions the more it seems that no one ever told you that when you are in a hole that the first thing that you do is stop digging.

If you honestly don't see a difference between an ethnic slur that is often used as or in conjunction with a death threat, and a reference to a Kevin Bacon "Flashdance" ripoff, I really can't help you. But I hope someone does.
Me, I'm sticking to fashion from now on. Anyone else amused by the return of 80s-style grommets on clothing?

Fuck you. That is such fucking bullshit I don't even think you believe it. You were probably offended, yez. But you weren't drawing attention to the issue. You were pissed and wanted to hit him where it hurt.
If you wanted to simply draw attention to the issue, you would have replied to him with: "I do go to Church - once a month - and do have some religious beliefs. However, I am quite annoyed by the commonly held opinion that anybody who does go to church or suggests the usage of a pastor is in the same class as a the ultra-Rightists mentioned above.
