Report from the Mass. Statehouse
So I was hanging around the Statehouse yesterday. The place is more amusing that Friday on the FB. The pro-gay marriage folks are MUCH more visible than the anti-, there are more of them and they are noisier, but the cameras seem to be hanging around the anti-s, who, let's face it, are a LOT more colorful.
Basically, the coalitions working together are absolutely bizarre, and if you look at the four votes that have occurred so far, you find that about 75 to 80% of the Reps and Senators can say that they have voted both for and against each of Gay Marriage and Civil Union. A lot of vote swapping is going on so people can build records -- the Senate President's motion had the support of virtually all the Senators, but only after it was determined by them that it would fail and they didn't need to buck their boss. Ditto with the House Speaker's resolution.
And on many votes the folks backing and opposing gay marriage itself are voting together to kill constitutional amendments that are anything but a pure yes or no on gay marriage, while at the same time the folks opposing gay marriage so far don't seem to have the umph to even get a straight up or down vote to the floor of the Constitutional Convention (but we'll see if they do if all the people trying to compromise fail a few more times).
Very amusing.

I'm sure he meant no disrespect -- actually, that almost bothers me more than if he had.
Look, there are some things that one just should not do, regardless of intent. E.g. Defecating on the meal cart on an airplane in flight is simply unacceptable, even if the chap meant no harm, and didn't think anyone would mind.

US Code, in fact.
But it's a fashion issue, not a political issue.

That's why there were a large number of free speech cases in the 1960's and early 1970's involving flag desecration.

Well all I have to say is that I am glad I have the right to disagree with this and to proudly proclaim my patriotism by wearing a flag T-shirt tightly hugging my shapely breast implants. God Bless Fucking America!

It is all fun and games until the polygamists start asking that their unions be legally recognized. Oh wait, they are already doing that in district court in Utah.

The NY Times news analysis yesterday made it seem like something of a circus issue, focusing mainly on the dissent pointing out that the sole remaining debate was really over whether gay marriage should be called marriage.
(from the dissent):
"Under this proposed bill, there are no
substantive differences left to dispute -- there is only, on both sides, a squabble over the name to be used. . . . As a result, we have a pitched battle over who gets to use the "m" word."
If truly the core of the issue, I can see how quickly it would become silly.

That sounds amusing, too.
All in all, the PB is going to be where the real sex talk happens around here for a while.

I never have either, and I see nothing wrong with this. To me it all comes down to intent.

Kerry on Imus
Didn't hear it myself, but Drudge is reporting that on Imus, Kerry said this about the Drudge allegations:
"Well, there is nothing to report," Kerry told IMUS. "So there is nothing to talk about. I'm not worried about it. No."

Sun-times columnist says Gore backed Dean because of potential female problems
With Kerry.
http://www.suntimes.com/output/sneed...s-sneed13.html
He says this is why Gore didn't pick Kerry to be his VP, too.

Will a Kerry intern scandel lead to Hillary taking the nomination?
http://www.humaneventsonline.com/article.php?id=3036
Speculation about Hillary getting the nomination if an intern scandal breaks the Kerry campaign.
I think it is unlikely that will happen. If a scandal does occur, I think Kerry will just apologize, Teresa will stand by her man, and he will still be the nominee.
