First, nice move to position yourself as the one who shouts: "Wrong!!"

Tibet is too small to break away, absent a disintegration of the PRC at some time too distant to measure. The muslim parts of Western China are more likely, but I think the conlsuon is the same.

This is why I think Iran would try to keep their progress a secret and stop just short of a full nuclear test.

I bet the program is too dispersed now to be reliably destroyed completely. Its not like the Osirak mission anymore. If Israel hits them, I predict they will do it with conventional weapons. As for Iran's response, that depends on what Israel did. If Israel attacks with WMDs, Iran would respond in kind.

I tend to agree that in a unifying EU, there is no need for the split.

They say they will. I'd say it depends on the timing of the announcement and how much Turkey needs the U.S.

So you think Isreal will do a lot of conventional bombing that won't accomplish anything?

What could Turkey accomplish by invading Kurdistan? What do they do with it once they have it?

Absolutely. They suck.
I don't understand the first thing you write. If we're taxing the poor at X rate, why does that rate go up or down depending on what rate we utilize to tax the rich?

What we need to do is slice the costs of the machine receiving the taxes. The poor's tax stays the same, the rich's drops, the govt gets less money. Conceptually, the govt then learns how to work with less, like a business. Conceptually, of course... which people like me would say is synonymous with "rationally" and "responsibly" in this case.

Regarding your earlier post on oil taxes, I'm surprised you'd buy into Tom Friedman's silly do-goodery. The market will dictate when and how we ween ourselves from oil. Imposing a tax like that would only sink our economy and hurt millions for no good reason. If the bullshit about us running out of oil is true, the laws of supply and demand will do a fine job of removing the issue from the hands of government, who'd surely make it worse by any interference.

Read this, it sounds like it's from Mars given what you all have made this board:
  • This is the truth that everyone needs to know. In fact, look at how we have exploited the natural resources in Afghanistan after we murdered almost a half million innocent women and children. Bush is a devout liar, if what he really wanted was progress in the Middle East, he wouldn't accomplish it by strong arming American troops on to the sacred soil where no infidels should be permitted. Change from the thieving western puppet governments can happen. We can help produce democraticly elected leaderships chose by the adult males of the Middle East that agree with those most adequately armed fundamentalist movements that represent true Islam (and isn't it their right to be free to chose?).

Do you want to know how? By giving everyone hope... A dream of a better tomorrow. By encouraging people to grow their own root vegetables, or breed protein producing animals. What's the satisfaction of holding a Kalishnakov or surface-to-air rocket launcher in your hand, or hijacking a Zionist jet, when you could be holding a ho or planting seeds in a peasent village? And you would know if your name, Gardener, is any indication.

Is this possible? Absolutely, of course it is! When I was in Uganda people were poor, but they were happy. The more you have, the less you have. That's kind of what I'm all about. Their satisfaction in spendning all day weaving a rug, rather than just buying one at the store. At one point in Uganda, I saw a great lake of sand and a massive speaking dog. It was a dog of love, not of hate. It was a spirit journey.

What you and I are talking about is hopes... Dreams... The magic of television. Especially public television. Puppets can say what men cannot.

My pro bono project is something called 'Speaking for the Underdog', it is the foundation I set up for my trust fund... We believe the anti-Zionist fundamentalist movements are a valid expression of a people's identity. A grouping... A community within a community. They are a way to be noticed in the boxy ghettos and refugee camps that Jews force Arabs to live in, in places like Palestine, Saudi Arabia and Yemen. You scream out, rather than urinate at the edge of your camp like a proud native. They spray paint anti-Zionist and Anti-American slogans on the walls at the bazaar to ward off predators. They infiltrate Zionist settlements or randomly shoot British and American citizens in parking lots to have a voice in the societies we've imposed on them to maintain our grip on the oil reserves.

We believe passionately in non-violent solutions to life's problems. The fundamentalist regimes have to learn to love... To be inclusionary. We'd award badges to good fundamentalist movements, and give bad ones a silly hat to wear. It would give people something to feel a part of. Kill with kindness, not a homemade explosive device.

For this to work, we need to remove the troops that have invaded the Holy Lands, disarm the Zionists and return their land to the rightful owners, and after the Zionists have returned to Europe or Brooklyn, we can send the funding earmarked for the genocide of Palestinians (see the murder of 50,000 peace-loving Muslims at Jenin, for example) to the Palestinians themselves to build their nation where the Zionist regime once stood.

We will not miss the money. Despite being a succesfull biglaw attorney, one that has not fallen victim to the Zionist designs at the 'new economy' firms, its not the money that matters. Like I said, possessions are not important at all. I'll pick up a hitchhiker in my Mercedes convertible any day. The other day, I picked up a young woman and we discussed a non-violent solution to war. We called it PEACE.

What we need to do is slice the costs of the machine receiving the taxes. The Poor’s tax stays the same, the Rich’s drops, the govt gets less money. Conceptually, the govt then learns how to work with less, like a business. Conceptually, of course... which people like me would say is synonymous with "rationally" and "responsibly" in this case.
I like the idea of starving the beast. The problem is if it doesn't work you get a sea of red ink.

As for taxation, I just think tax cuts help the poor more than they do the rich. Besides just the justice involved, I believe the strength in our economy derives from the lower middle, and middle classes improving their situation. Small businesses produce the bulk of GNP in this country. When the little guys move up you get more small business, and the purchasing power of the country is greatly benefited. When the rich get richer, the purchasing power of the nation does not increase much, and big businesses just get bigger. The focus should be on creating new business. Don't get me wrong, it is good businesses get bigger, and the rich get wealthier, but if you have to choose between the two it is better to create new businesses and make the lower and middle classes wealthier.

So in my opinion, tax cuts for the working poor and lower middle class, does a great deal more than a tax cut for the rich. In fact all things being equal, a tax increase for the wealthy doesn't hurt them that much but the consequential tax cut you can make for the poor and lower middle class from such tax cuts does wonders for them.

If I was in charge of the Bush tax cut I would have concentrated the tax cuts on the middle and lower classes and left the rich alone.

I agree with that in principle the problem is that all the cheap oil is owned by places that suck. So because it is so cheap our country becomes dependent on it. That puts us in a vulnerable position. It is good that we are buying up all their cheap oil and if oil price rises all sorts of supplies would open up in the US (that are not cost efficient now). However, if they just cut us off the markets would adjust, but in the mean time it would really hurt. Might crash the whole system. If the oil was controlled by a bunch of liberal democracies that respected human rights and didn't produce terrorists, I wouldn't have a care in the world. But having a bunch of wacos control the pumps (when we have shut ours down and it would take a while to get them back on line) is not a good strategic position to be in.

ummm that was in response to a Thottham sock. actualy reading over the old board it occurs to me you could make an argument that Petey strengthened the board. he gave such great material to work from.

as to your second question, yes this place has sunk really fucking low. infirm with a cast of newbers is probably a better place. why doesn't anyone care to fix this place?

1. Re the beast, there's no red ink if the beast collapses. When the money runs out, the program stops. When the govt workers whine about being out of work, you give them a lesson in how businesses run. Balance the numbers or run aground.

2. I agee with you about middle class tax cuts, but the idea of soaking the rich smacks of social engineering. I can't morally accept it, no matter how pragmatically sensible it is. Call me an idealist...

3. If we stopped using the oil from these degenerate "nations," their economies would fold (yes, even with China making up the difference). You want to really see Islamic turmoil? Pull out our money and the Allah fanatics will turn the place into a bloody hotbed of 10th century culture (at least now they think in the 13th century). We have to engage Islam and drag it into the present century, not disengage it and let it fester.

By the way, to the people who say "Christianity was no better than Islam... It killed millions," stick that argument up your ass. It's 2006. We live in a far different world than the one of the Crusades. The primary problem with Islam is its refusal to evolve. That someone else behaved atrociaouly years ago is no excuse. You have a duty to behave in accordance with the present civilized world.
