Hmph. Sunnydale had the same exact configuration of friends.

Friendship
Childhood: I have at least two close friends remaining whom I met when my years still numbered in the single digits. One I see about 2x/week (em escaped the patch, too), one I correspond with regularly and we see each other when we visit our respective families. Both would let me move in with them for 4 months if I got evicted, but I don't think either would give me a kidney. These are probably my two closest friends.
High school: I have 3-4 HS friends remaining to some degree or other. All male, oddly. 1 I see 2x/year or so because he lives out here, 2 I see very infrequently but we have the "long lost sibling" thing when we meet up - it feels like no time at all has passed. There are another one or two I see infrequently but still consider friends - they'd probably fly out to come to my funeral.
College: Two left - one male (ex), one female, both lawyers. I see the female more often, the whole "ex" thing (and the fact that his current wife would probably try to kill me on sight) prevents the other from really being a regular friendship, though we have fun hanging out when he sneaks away.
Graduate/law school: Some people I'm in regular contact with - probably 4-5 in total. One I'd consider a close friend but lives on another continent - the others are "medium" friends, in that they will make some effort to keep plans with you but wouldn't welcome me moving onto their sofa for more than a few days. One I'd consider a "medium" friend just because he lives far away and we never see him & his family, but he'd probably get tissue typed for that kidney just because that's the sort of guy he is.
Work: I have one friend with whom I've had one of those 'Nam/Catholic School experiences, too - we're in contact but haven't seen each other in person for a few years. There is another I'd like to keep in touch with, but she went missing - I have no idea what happened to her, but she isn't in MarHub or the phone book anymore.
Family: I've actually gotten closer to some of both my and the Mr's family over the last few years. One couple in the Mr's family lives nearby so we see them 3-4x per year for extended house-parties. One group in my family we just keep in regular contact with because we've discovered we really like each other (go figure).

This goes for same-sex colleges as well. Inhibitions go way down and there's absolutely nothing you don't learn about your friends--if you can stand each other after that, it's a lifetime bond.

We tried counseling; she tried medication. She stayed on Wellbutrin long enough to quit smoking, but not permenantly. She had a real medication adversion.
She also had irrational trust issues (as I alluded to earlier this week), which the counselling did nothing to resolve. Ultimately, I realized the relationship was never going to return to a state in which I could be comfortable, and it was time to end it.
You aren't going to be alone for the rest of your life. Neither is s/he. Both my ex and I started dating again pretty soon after the separation was definite, and we both remarried. I believe she is happy. I certainly am.

I attended both public school and private school. I keep in closer contact with my private school friends mostly because (a) I like them, (b) they live in New York and (c) if I were to ever fall out of touch with them, the school has so many alumni events that it's just easier to get back in touch with them (and (d) the pillow fight memories, of course).
This is not to say I don't keep in touch with people from my other highschool. I'm pretty good friends with my first real boyfriend. But he lives a long way away so I don't see him much.
Also very good friends with some people from law school - again, it's convenient - they are in NYC and so am I.
Other good friends that I have here I have met through other friends here and outside interests (my tuesday morning kayaking on the east river club etc).
But the reason I am responding to Atticus is because his thesis is correct at least in my case.

You mean the ones with the pillow fights and the squeeze bottles of hersheys syrup, right? I like those parties.

That doesn't seem like too bad of a fate, but my sources say Pamela will die within 10 years.
