Yes you can. But my quesiton is, why?

Personally, I do not tip when I buy coffee at Dunkin Donuts, but I do tip when a bartender has merely opened a beer bottle for me. I do not know why I do this.

No, but I certainly expect a success fee when we complete a transaction.

What's the deal here - people object to throwing some change in a jar for kids who keep the counters and floors clean, throw out the mess on the tables, and mix up the latte?
Starbucks employees keep the counters and floors and tables clean?

Again, I feel very conflicted about the whole "tip at Sbux" thing and I go every day and have done so for approx 10 years.

Part of me says "hell ya, tip they have a hard gig" and another says Howard Schulz you need to increase their hourly ain't my responsibility and they do get "more than mc d's hourly" like 8-12 an hour compared to 6-7. plus health benefits.

another part of me deep down inside rails at paying 5 for coffee and refuses to tip on that principle

They do at the three Starbucks I frequent - but, then, we tip around here! (Actually, I will go out of my way to hit the Starbucks where the counterhelp is friendly, the place is clean, and the lines are kept moving, and will drop incredible amounts of sparechange, sometimes even 87 whole cents, into a jar in appreciation for this).

Because the alternatives are far worse.

I wouldn't go out of my way to go to any Starbucks because the coffee sucks.

You do it for the same reason most people do it. Traditionally, bartenders, waiters, shoeshine guys, etc. have been tipped, because they provide a service above and beyond simply handing you some merchandise and collecting your money.

Somewhere along the line, counter help started getting the idea that they were entitled to tips, too. Enough people just automatically dropped cash in the cup or jar or whatever that it's becoming more common.

I think it's bullshit. If I were the kind of customer who went to Starbucks, sat at the tables, left my shit for the emloyees to clean up, I'd leave a tip. But I walk in, get a cup of coffee, walk out. What extra value do they provide that justifies a tip?

That said, where one can certainly enhance the other (based on reasoned scientific hypothesis or personal or anecdotal evidence), sure, mix them up a little.

But these people who are all about having sex on drugs just because it seems like a cool idea are generally wasting drugs and sex. If I'm losing my shit staring a trees and grooving on a microbrew and some live music, I don't want to be dragged somewhere to have sex. Maybe its me... when I'm all screwed up on goofballs or booze, I just want to stay screwed up. The sex is for when I'm not screwed up and need something to do. It's a buzz that goes away immediately afterward, so you can do it anytime. You should save that for when you have to be sober. It's just good time/buzz management...

All this said, I break this senseless rule all the time because, unfortunately, the "I think I'd like to get laid" center of the brain follows no rational management plan.

I just wasted five minutes of my life and yours. Put it on my tab...
It did not take even close to five minutes to read your post. Even adding the time I am wasting responding to it, you still owe me two or three minutes max. I tell you this because I am honest.

I am sure that if you complain you will get a coupon for a free cup of coffee. If well represented, you may even get two. Talk to ppnyc - she has the right skill level, and I understand she only takes 25%.

On another note, what kind of reptile doesn't tip? It's a good thing you never showed up at Friendly's when ncs was there, or your name would be mud on this board.
Hold on a second: there is a difference between tipping because someone sticks a cup in your face and because there is a service being provided for which a tip is customary.

Putting coffee in a cup and taking my money, whether at the corner deli or starbux, is not a service for which a tip is customary. Taking my dry cleaning, giving me my change at the grocery store, giving me my paper, and selling me my train ticket are also not "services" for which a tip should be expected.

Bringing coffee to my table: different story.

What about when picking up take-out food and using a credit card?

The worst is this place near my house. It's a fresh pasta store that has cheese and wine and greens for sale. They also make sandwiches and have some seating. Am I supposed to tip somebody because I bought enough to use a credit card but fetched it all myself? I tend to tip only if I get pasta made or someone spends time discussing wine with me, but I sometimes feel guilty and give a small tip to the dudes ringing me up.

Difference: you are sitting at the bar, consuming beer at the bar, which is more like sitting in a restaurant, consuming food at the restaurant than taking out a cup of coffee.

When you go into a liquor store to buy a bottle of wine do you tip the person who puts it in the bag?
