Is it just me, or is it not blatantly obvious that this wasn't such a good idea???

I disagree. I think the results they are looking for could come in a few ways. (1) There are enough black people out there that apparently fit what sounds like a very generic description, that they can't or don't want to do the footwork on all of them. So, by having them "volunteer" to come in and prove their innocence, they can compile a list of people that is much more manageable. That doesn't necessarily mean they'll get permission to tap these people's phones. But that's not saying much when it comes to how a cop can check you out. Besides, a list of all the black men who don't "cooperate" will come in handy for quite awhile, I'm sure.
(2) "We aren't archiving the dna results." Bull. Shit. It may not be saved for use in court to prove someone guilty. But I'm sure they'll use it when they can to make their police work easier. Just run dna at the scene against what they have on file and voila! Instant suspect. Start building a case after that.

And the ACLU is doing the police force's job here - frankly, when you KNOW you are almost certain to be talking to a totally innocent person, I am pretty shocked that the PD themselves weren't making it clear that compliance was not mandatory (to the extent that it would have mattered, them being the cops and all).
|
Shock and awe! The cops aren't doing their job informing people of their rights? Come on.

Fascinating advice: consult a lawyer. Ask woody allen for a reference.

Cool. Then can you tell us FBers what's the deal with the "3587," and what the hell is the significance of "mmm3587?" I think you often have good posts, and I'm not trying to rip you. I just think it's an odd moniker, and I wonder if I'm missing something.

Well I originally had a reserved seat on TWA Flight 800 on July 17, 1996 (I ended up going to Paris that night for my backpacking around Europe pre-law school trip) on Air France because it was $150 cheaper).
Anyone else have any close calls?

I have a friend who was booked on that flight as well. Scary. I am sure that MANY of us have 9-11-related close calls...

Me, my wife and 2 little kids were on a train that derailed, and smashed into a loaded fertilizer car. 2 people died, 150 went to hospital with broken bones, etc.
We were in the next to last car. I almost upgraded to 1st class, but the agent said it was too late to load the additional meals. 1st Class is always the first car. Don't ride 1st class on a train. when trains have problems its always at the front. Look at pictures of most train crashes and the rear cars look fine, the front cars are totaled. Our 1st class car had almost 100% people in hospital, but looked like it was worse. It was flat on its side.
Our car, 3rd back barely turned. We all walked off w/o a scratch.
You know the bench seals at the end of train cars that face an opposed bench? We were in those so there was room to travel when we crashed- Many people facing a seat in standard seats broke noses.

Comfort and because for many women, it improves the way your breasts look in clothes. Moreover, if you go braless in many tops, it is noticeable and generally not appropriate for work.
I know some women find it more comfortable to be without a bra, but if you get a decent fitting bra, for some of us, it is actually more comfortable. I agree if your bra doesn't fit, it can be awfully uncomfortable.
And it just depends on your breasts and the top whether you look bad braless in clothes. Some women look very pointy if they are braless. Not a great look, IMO.

It's the first WaPo article from yesterday; link is in the PB discussion on the same issue. I think BRC's pointing to the fact that the cops held an on-campus public meeting to discuss the issue, then nixed the program the next day. Not a sign of confidence or intransigence.
There's a history here. It's a university town and therefore marginally better than its region on race relations, but Wynton Marsalis was arrested in Charlottesville in 1984 following a concert on campus because he was mistaken for a robbery suspect. Oooooooooops.

If you are looking at the two as individuals, and attribute 20% of the joint filing amount to the person making 20k, then yes, this is true. ($3723 vs 2,646) But it seems shortsighted for a guy to begrudge his wife $2262 in tax savings just so he can save $1077.
Hell, even with my then soon to be ex-wife I managed to work it out to file jointly so that I could save several K in taxes, even though it theoretically cost her more (I split the savings with her).

While we are sharing... my wife was in a car accident in which she went end-over-end into a tree at highway speed. The car was completely flattened, and the jaws of life were needed to get her out, and she was airlifted to the hospital. In the end, aside from bruising from the airbag and the seatbelt, her injuries amounted to a broken ankle and a concussion.
