When I was 16 and working at Friendly's (hi g3!) as an ice cream scooper, we had no tip jar (I think that they might now), but sometimes, out of the foodness of their hearts, people who came in and ordered a bunch of sundaes to go, or even those who were picking up to go food orders, gave me a tip of a couple of bucks. I must say, as an underpaid, never-much-cash-in-my-pocket high school student, I appreciated those people. And I never spit in *their* ice cream.

I have no point. Just thought I would share.

I sometimes throw my change in the Starbucks tip jar and I never buy anything there that costs more than $3 (I don't go to Starbucks very often and I can't remember whether the tea costs more than $2 or not, but I think not). The change means nothing to me, so I don't care whether it was earned or whether it is a tip-appropriate service or not. I doubt they make a killing off of the proceeds of the tip jar. They probably started putting one up because some people were tipping and if there is a tip jar, the tips are actually shared by all employees instead of the counter kids getting all the tips.

Just got lunch. Sandwich shop trying to be more than it is with faux suede chairs and a fancy floor, but a smaller menu than its sandwich joint parent that's all around the district. Tip cups (water cups) next to the registers. Register girls do nothing but take your money and hand you your change - and they put the fucking coins on top of the bills, no less. Won't even put your sandwich, fruit, chips, and honest tea in a bag. The bags are over on the side with the salt and pepper and forks and napkins. You have to bag your own lunch your own damn self.

Fuck them and their plastic tip cups. I'm keeping my .57, bitches -- even though I don't even have any fucking pockets!

My daughter worked this summer at one of those rib/chicken/burger places where you go to the counter and place your order, but they bring it to you and bus your table. She had much the same experience.

For the record, I always tip at that place, even when I'm not sitting in Princess's section.
