Also, if it comes down to only having time to do one or the other, do the cardio.
Why is weight loss more important? I can maybe see why if someone is, like, over 70 lbs or so overweight because just hauling around that amount of weight is hard on your body. But for someone who has not that much to lose, I would think that getting rid of excess fat would be a reasonable goal.

We were both arguing (I think) on the assumption that the theoretical person was "overweight". It was never defined. I was thinking about someone 20-30 lbs overweight. Of course, then you have to define "ideal weight", and I think those scales are way off.

I've also noticed that the majority of female non-elite long distance runners get very bulky in the leg area. I have MANY (girl)friends where this has occurred. I try to run behind the semi-elite women, who aren't emaciated like the pros and have great asses and legs to run behind...

This is a silly argument and after this, you win. But, if you're building muscle and losing fat, you're not necessarily doing it at the same ratio, therefore, adding more muscle than fat lost will result in weight gain. But if you look at someone who has just lost weight and someone who has turned their flabby muscles into muscles with some definition and lost a little less fat, the latter always looks better. And I bet you they feel better too.

What does that have to do with anything?

I disagree. I bet if we could both train fattie twins, mine would look better faster than yours.

You're on.

God, how much fun would this be (in a really perverse way - b/c I would be the trainer from hell)?

Fat mass density = 0.9g/cm2
Muscle mass density = 1.1g/cm2

That's a bigger difference than I expected.

This just leads me to a much bigger question: how can european women look GREAT without doing shit? All they do is walk. The thought of going to the gym is as crazy as the thought of them putting ketchup on their fries...

My money would be on Thurgreed. He seems like he would be more of a coaxer than a hardass. I think Coltrane's twin would quit on him.

Actually, I know I read a few months ago that recent studies show that this is exactly wrong - if you are exercising to lose weight (rather than train for long distance running or some such), you should do weight training first, and it should be your primary form of exercise. (Particularly for women, who get the added benefit of improving bone density.) There was a whole series of NYT articles on how weight-loss thinking is changing in a whole series of disciplines (nutrition, medicine, exercise, endocrinology) and basically everything we've been taught for the last 30+ years appears to be misguided if not entirely backwards. Weight training vs cardio was one of the highlight examples.

I thought I posted links to them here.

I love that baltassoc with his Dr. Honeydew avatar posted this.

(Anecdotally, every other day in the weight room for 12 weeks, with pretty much daily cardio and a modified atkins was the best weight loss formula I have ever found.)

Freedom for Montecore!! (sort of)

Montecore the tiger will be spared destruction and will be released from quarantine tomorrow. He will be returned to the tiger habitat at the Mirage.

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmp...ack_magician_3

The story also notes PETA has been protesting the Mirage in an effort to get Siegfried and Roy to give up the show and release the tigers... Imagine the hilarity that would ensue if the keepers just opened up Monty's cage for the protesters and said "o.k., here you go..."
