It's probably less about tobacco, and more about the HUGE decrease in bar & club receipts since the ban went into effect.
Apparently, bar owners were right all along - non-smokers don't spend money in bars.

So whats the deal? I was up a couple of weeks ago and was smoking at the time and did not avoid bars just cuz I wanted to smoke, I just stepped outside. Do people really opt to stay home if they cant smoke?

And if someone does die, it just shows that no smoking kills too.

That hasn't happened in some other cities fortunately. I am actually going to bars, etc. a lot more often--and stay longer and spending more--now that I don't have to come home with my hair and clothes reeking of someone else's stale smoke. Viva smoking bans!

I think people in Canada are just as violent as anywhere else - not as much access to guns, so not as many shootings, but people kill and beat each other up just the same there as in other places. Apparently way back when we burned down the White House twice. (Not really something to be proud of). I guess someone did a good PR job at some point about our peacefulness.
|
Well, stoning the ducklings might be considered kinder and more peaceful than shooting at them.

No, unemployed people don't spend money in bars. Smokers just use that as a threat when states want to put a non-smoking into effect.
Out west, non-smoking bans and/or non-smoking areas have been around for years and no one has really pushed to bring it back due to lack of business.

I think the people who are put out are the barflies who sit all day in a bar, sipping a beer or whiskey while smoking away. Although I suppose if the faced with the choice of getting another drink at a club or going outside to have a smoke, instead of getting a drink and smoking at the same time, business might take a hit there too.
But in NYC, isn't a cigarette more expensive than a beer? Who can afford to smoke?

It's classic psychopathic behavior. Studies have shown that all mass murders were animal torturers as children. It's like a gateway drug. Of course that's like saying that all heroin users started with pot. And mother's milk. That doesn't mean that all animal torturers will become serial killers, but your percentages increase greatly.

Does dressing the cat up in doll's clothes count as torture? If so, you all better watch out -- I'm gonna gitcha.

Obviously you have never visited the reservation for cheap tax-free smokes and gas. And don't forget the fireworks.
Kinda makes the fact that they barricade and light up the interstate every few years worth the hassle. ![Big Grin](http://www.lawtalkers.com/forums/images/smilies/biggrin.gif)

I didn't realize NYC had such a strong bum lobby. Goddamned special interest groups!

They tried to get a smoking ban in Toronto twice - first in 1998, I think, and then in 2000. Both times it was rescinded. I guess along with being violent and crazy, Canadians also like to smoke (at least those in Toronto).

Brooklyn Councilman James Davis, who has also served as a New York City police officer, died after being shot twice in the chest.
Well, that ends my jokes on the subject. I wonder if he was targeted for being police -- that would suck.
