Note
Do not watch a fashion design reality show with anyone who is in any sort of design profession and/or has spent any time in a design education program.
Stupid architects.

But kids have to learn at some point that although they would rather you be there, it won't always work like that. Hopefully you won't read extra into this and I won't have to respond with something like, "You know I didn't mean that a crying child should always (or often or whatever) be ignored."

We always made a point of answering our children's cries when they were infants and well into toddlerhood (is that a word?). We didn't always give them whatever they were crying for, but we always responded. We now have two of the most secure, self-confident people I know for children. I can't say absolutely that it was because of the way we raised them when they were younger, but I know it had to have some impact.
I'm not saying that our way was the only way. We all make our own choices in parenting. I'm just reporting on favorable results from one choice.

I recently watched Hollywood Homicide, ALL THE WAY THROUGH. What a steaming piling of poop (fingers crossed for the board) that was. Harrison Ford should be forced into retirement after that piece of shit. Top 5, worst movies ever.
I can't stop watching a really bad movie, for some reason, though. I have to see how bad it can get.
Btw, Hartnett should be paying me. He's responsible for two of the worst movies I've ever seen now.

More inspirational choices include:
Cream, "Disraeli Gears"
Jimi Hendrix Experience, "Are you Experienced?" or "Electric Ladyland". I also think the album "Blues" is very good, especially for a young aspiring guitarist.
Buddy Guy, "Buddy's Baddest" or "Damn Right I've Got the Blues"
Richard Thompson "Small Town Romance" - best folk guitarist in the world. The bootleg Live at the Bottomline is actually better (but difficult to find), but this is very good, live and acoustic. May be a little slow for 13 year olds. OTOH, it's the album he'll pick back up five years from now and think "Damn. My aunt is not only smokin' hot, she sure can pick a good CD."
The Yardbirds, "Greatest Hits, Volume 1" Clapton, Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page, were all in the Yardbirds.
AC/DC, Back in Black. I think this album defines heavy metal.
Note: I haven't really thought about lyric suitability for an early teen here. There are some mature themes here, especially with the blues albums and AC/DC, but I think you're okay.
|
Back in Black is not heavy metal. AC/DC is more just hard rock. Black Sabbath defines heavy metal. Christ, I'm a fucking tool...
The kid should have these...
1. Stickey Fingers/Exile/Beggars/Let it Bleed
2. Two From the Vault (Smoking Dead at its finest)
3. Axis: Bold as Love (just because the title tune is that fucking great)
4. Tyrannosaurus Hives (this is the best modern rock has to offer)
5. Led Zeppelin Box Set
6. Back in Black/Highway to Hell/Powerage (like it or not, AC/DC is one of the bigger incluences on music in the past 25 yrs)
7. Everything by Janes
8. Metallica - Master of Puppets
9. Straight Outta Compton/Chronic 2000/Hello Nasty/Takes a Nation of Millions
10. Velvet Underground - Any one of their records
11. Neil Young - Decade
12. Dylan - Live 1966

Try telling the boy he'll probably end up looking like you, and see how his self-confidence handles that.

Give it time. They're a work in progress. Don't jinx yourself - they have a lot of time to expose themselves as massive fuck ups.

Buy the remastered version of Soul to Soul with the extended live version of "Little Wing/Third Stone from the Sun." Jesus Christ. He finds notes I never heard before...

If it makes you feel any better, when I am not logged in and read the board I see people's signature lines and yours makes me laugh every time.

My children have thrown some temper tantrums, but really just when overtired, talk back not infrequently, including to other adults, particularly Republicans and other fools, and have an irritating habit of making us think and asking that we explain things. But they usually do the talking back and making us think with smiles, good humor, and intelligence.
I am just reporting on more favorable results from my choice. So all of our kids are above average.

I am scared of having ugly children. What does one do when your child is objectively terrifically homely? I'm serious... is there a moment where you say "Damnit, the kid's ugly." Do parents discuss these issues? Do you worry to yourself as the child is developing?
My wife's family has a bunch of cats and sometimes you get these perfect kittens that develop these really long faces and bizarre features. And others get these really attractive perfectly fat cat faces. I don't know how I'll handle watching a kid develop. Its all too much for me. I don't know if I can go through with it.

You always confuse me when you use the word "cats" to refer to actual felines.
And why are you legitimately scared of having ugly children?
