The Red Sox went after him harder than the Yankees did. They didn't finish the deal and all I heard was how pissed off they were that they couldn't get it done. (And it wasn't his fault it didn't happen as he was ready to eat part of his salary.)

The slap at the glove thing is the most blown-out-of-proportion play in sports in the last 20 fucking years. I'm glad he did it. Showed me he wanted to win. Good for him. He should have slowed up a bit until Arroyo was in the baseline and then ran right the fuck over him. When Kent Hrbeck illegally pulled whoever-it-was' leg off the bag on a pick off move to first base in the World Series back in '87 and the ump mistakenly called the guy out, no one said shit. ARod's slap was no big deal and didn't even influence the game (except to hurt the Yankees).

I agree that ARod is a greedy, self-centered POS, but who the fuck is Trot Nixon to start shit? And Schilling couldn't be more full of himself, taking way too much credit for an amazing comeback that had more to do with Derek Lowe (kicked to the curb) and Arroyo (and numerous other Sox players) than him.

Your post doesn't seem to contradict anything I said, except for the fact that I wouldn't want him on my team. Magglio Ordonez (obviously not as talented as A-Rod, but talented nonetheless)didn't re-sign with the White Sox. He said he wanted to go where he could win. So he signed with the highest bidder for one of the worst teams. Fuck him. He was one of my favorite players, but I wouldn't take him back for $1/season. I've hated A-Rod ever since he pulled the same move with Texas/Seattle.

I'm going to enjoy this year.
Fact is, given that the Yankees were in the midst of an incredible choke, I think of A-Rod bending the rules as similar to someone picking a fight when their team is down. There's a time when you try anything to get your team to really fight, so it showed some spirit. You don't expect a lot of praise for it, but you do it.
You can trash talk all you want about Schilling, but he did more to win those games that any of those pricey pinstripers did to stop him.

I agree and disagree. I don't see it as trying to pick a fight. I see it as trying to get away with a foul. But, yeah, they were choking and no one seemed to care on the Yankees. Fucking fight for the win or suffer watching someone else wear the championship ring.

Right. He's amazing. He got killed in his first appearance and pitched okay in his second. I agree our guys laid down, but stop sucking Schilling's dick and give the guys on your team who deserve the credit their due.

Hockey then and now
I have come to the conclusion that Gary Bettman should be hanged by the neck until dead for ruining hockey. This is a sport that should probably be three times as popular than it is.
At the gym today MSG network had an old hockey game on. From the mid-80s I believe as both Greschner & John "Beezer" Vanbiesbrouck were on the ice.
I was surprised at how clumsily and poorly most of the players skated. Today, I see vastly better skating at an AHL game. In addition, many travel team 10 and 11 year olds I see today appear to have better skating skills, stopping, starting, edgework than some of the guys who I grew up idolizing.
Why? Skating science and instruction is definitely better. I would bet more kids are playing now than ever before. So how does that not translate into TV ratings?
Too much clutch and grab? Ice too narrow? Lousy, lousy marketing?

Too small and fast of an object of interest. They can't make the arenas bigger, because you need to be able to see the puck, so the live audience isn't ever going to be huge. TV views are also limited by that factor. It's just not well suited for huge mass views like football or baseball, where it's fairly obvious where the ball is - a puck is streaking around so fast and so unpredictably that it gets lost.

I don't follow hockey for many of the same reasons I don't follow basketball. I didn't play hockey growing up (I don't think it was available) and I don't really understand the strategy and skills involved. There was no NHL franchise to follow, and the minor league team seemed to come and go. Also, there are so many games that individual games during the season just don't seem that important. I'll watch hockey every once in a while, but not with the sort of zeal that attracts advertising dollars. That will probably change as more people in different parts of the country grow up with hockey.

I keep forgetting about the first game. First three games as a matter of fact. For Red Sox fans, the Series didn't start until Game 4.
I give lots of guys credit; it was a helluva team. I have always liked Nixon, and Lowe was incredible - Nixon didn't surprise me, Lowe did. But despite having a lousy outing in Game 1, Schilling delivered at the key time and all season.

In good faith, I honestly don't buy this. I and millions of other Canadians have never had any trouble seeing the puck on tv. I'd like to think we have better eyesight, but I know given the strength of my contact lenses that this is not the case. When Fox first started showing hockey on tv and lit up the puck, it was considered a crazy idea. I don't think it entered too many people's heads that it was difficult to see the puck. You just need good camera operators (there is huge disparity in quality between the camera work on CBC and that on any US station).
