If you have a cd-rom burner on your desktop and a cd drive on your laptop, you can burn and then try to boot with a Knoppix CD (you can also order a cd).

Knoppix Site

Order a CD (there are other places to order a cd listed on the Knoppix site).

The advantage of using Knoppix is that it can sidestep some problems that arise from, say, a Windows driver, because it is Linux. If you can boot from Knoppix, then you know its a hard drive problem, or some sort of corruption in the operating system, fixable by reformmatting or possiblly replacing the hard drive. Often, Knoppix can let you nonetheless get stuff off your hard drive (although with the backup, that sounds like not such a big deal for you). If it won't boot off the knoppix cd, then you've likely got a motherboard or similar problem (i.e., time for a new computer).

Thanks for the information. I'm making the boot floppies right now. I'm sure I'll go home to find no floppy drive. My work PC doesn't have a CD burner, and the IT Guys are at lunch so I can't ask them a favor before I have to leave.

I wouldn't be surprised if it were the motherboard, although that would suck as I've only had it for 14 months. I actually thought it overheated yesterday.

David Lee Roth wanted to get nabbed in Washington Square.

If you're a celeb and you can't get what you need outside the limited scope of law enforcement's prying eyes, you need a new agent.

What you picture as tap dancing ain't shit. Hell, even historically, black tap dancers were quite different from the Fred Astaires and Gene Kellys. You just haven't been exposed to them.

I am glad to see that the website I posted did not seem to cause massive board-wide technical meltdowns. It was the last thing I did before my HP laptop shut down and refused to start up again. Because I had no backup internet access, I was unable to warn y'all yesterday.

As for the laptop, it tries to start windows but repeatedly fails. There appears to be some blue screen from hell that is intended to tell me that my computer is terminal, but it flashes off so quickly I can't figure out what it says. I may have to call one of those computer geeks who is always leaving messages on my home machine despite my being on every do-not call list, including those of vendors with whom I have done business in the past. This would require me to lift two boycotts: the one on businesses that leave automated messages on home answering machines, and the one on establishing any relationship, whether business or personal, with anyone who drives a PT Cruiser.
Um, let me know if you fix this, because this happened to me over a week ago (on a Dell). I have not yet worked myself up to calling the endless-hold people, though having neither TV nor internet access at home will push me to it soon. Luckily I was out of town earlier this week. I watched like 4 episodes of X Files in a row. It was not a good cure for insomnia.

I need to learn how to manage short trips to the east coast better. I feel like shit after them -- kills at least a day.

ETA, because I did not STP, I have not tried sticking the windows system disk thingies in the CD thingy to start it, but I pondered it. I too can't even get to the point where I would safe-start it anymore -- most recently, all it does if I press the power button is make the power and the hard drive lights go on (steady), blink the caps lock light 10 times, and then all goes dark. It really seems like it's trying to tell me something with that caps lock light, but I don't speak its language.

EATA, if the computer really is fried, I'm getting a mac next time.

I had a laptop commit suicide two years ago by overheating and melting itself. The tech guys said that they'd never seen a keyboard melt like that before. BUT, they were able to rescue the hard drive, and more importantly, the data on the hard drive. Even if the computer is dead, dead, dead, the hard drive may be salvagable.

Sounds like a virus. In any event, if it is the HD the computer should not keep restarting, there should be an error message very early on in the start process. Windows is on the HD, only a basic startup is flash ram, if I recall. You'd be able to easily tell with startup floppy. The CD drive won't work anyway unless the driver is contained in the startup floppy. I had a HD burn out a few weeks back, taking 23GB of iTunes MP3s with it. I had it backed up, but the backup was f'ed as well for some reason. That sucked. I had to illicitly pull all the stuff off the iPod back to the computer (only 15GB worth however). Now I back up frequently.

A diagnosis can be performed for the price of one pitcher of mango sangria, so I hear.

So you're saying the ONE time I told Trend Micro to come back later, I'm busy, I got fucked?

I'd really better be careful. Those wills and AMDs are out there.

Linux coding can only be done by free-range hackers wearing all-natural hemp fibers while buzzed.

Dude. You download the software. You burn it to a CD. You put it in the cd-drive. The end.

Shit, if that's too complicated, or a burner isn't available, you have somebody mail you one for about $5, including shipping.

No muss, no fuss, no selling out Taiwan to the Chinese for political favors.

Oh, I know. I was talking about writing apps that run in Linux.
