I think a skull-splitting would be rather stimulating.

I find the whole bright boy chooses self-destructive descent-into-hell theme interesting -- and so often relevant.

So go ahead - name the worst books your teachers forced you to read:
A Separate Peace.

I hated hated hated Great Expectations, though I suspect that I'd probably like it now.

Billy Budd sucked.

I have never made it through a Dickens book. And Lord knows I've tried. I don't know why, but I just can't make it past the first few chapters.

But "More gruel, please." is one of the best lines ever written, isn't it?

The first few chapters aren't the problem. It's the middle third that kills you. But once you've suffered through that, he wraps everything up nicely at the end. I like his stuff.

Fucking Hell it's the Book Club

A Lantern in Her Hand
Merchant of Venice
and some stupid jousting book with Miles Farnsworth that I can't remember.

And now back to our regularly scheduled criticizing of others.
Nicole Ritchie before and after. From slovenly to bony.
Her face is getting that Diana Ross tight look to it. And her nose appears to have lost weight as well.

Really? You hated that? It was really fucking depressing, but I didn't think it was unreadable the way some of the selections highlighted here are (e.g., The Red Badge of fucking Courage).

Oh yes you have.

ETA: And if you're implying my perpetual discontent is chosen, I assure you its not. I know its terminal, so why not enjoy the palliatives? Maybe Ethan Frome's a good metaphor. If you can't get off the sled, enjoy the ride...
