The fallout of the Dan Savage column in which he had the temerity to suggest that only the most exceptionally fit women look good in navel-baring tops was stunning. He got letters from fat-acceptance people saying we basically don't have the right to make aesthetic judgments of what looks bad on people. Having an opinion was oppression to these people.
Fat-acceptance people should probably concentrate on something with broader public acceptance, like wider airline seats: helps you, helps me. I'll march to Birmingham for that one. But the "right" to be free from negative thoughts about your ass? Fatty, please.

To play Devil's Advocate for a moment, if Savage had merely had negative thoughts about the display of some people's stomachs and asses, only those fat-acceptance people who are also blessed with ESP would have said something. And the ESP receptors don't work too well when they're buried under pounds of flesh.

i'm hoping this San fran case will catch on. This is just the kind of precedent i need to show people on Politics that being able to form a coherent argument shouldn't be a necessary prerequisite to convince people of my positions.

EXERCISING HER RIGHT TO WORK
Fitness instructor wins weight-bias fight
Jennifer Portnick, a 240-pound San Francisco aerobics instructor rejected by Jazzercise because of her size, has reached an agreement under which the firm will drop its requirement that instructors look fit.
"I'm absolutely thrilled with this outcome," said Portnick, 38, a computer systems training manager who works out six days a week and has sufficient stamina to lead back-to-back aerobics classes.
"I'm lucky to live in San Francisco, where there's a law to protect people like me."
|
hey A. did you happen to go to this?
Quote:
The terms of the agreement were announced Monday to great jubilation at a "street circus" at Justin Herman Plaza celebrating the 10th International No Diet Day. The message: Health and fitness are what counts, not size.
The rally featured rotund cheerleaders waving pompons, poetry about poundage and assorted fat activism: "Two-four-six-eight, we do not regurgitate.
Three-five-seven-nine, love your body, it's just fine."

I will show these people the joys of the sleeve and the loose fitting but not tent-like top.
And Richard Simmons had his own aerobics schtick and he's no Brad Pitt in the abs department. This lady had a valid point - someone just needs to show her how to dress.

Makes it tough for the nice young ladies working their way through school.*
*Anybody ever buy that line? Except Mr. $28k tab, that is??

That nice redhead in Orlando went to Rollins. Yep. Uh huh. Of course, I was 21 at the time and willing to believe a lot.
Are Florida strip clubs still the best deal in the land? I remember that the "House of Babes" in the Orlando suburbs had specials, 2 dances and a wicked cool T-shirt for the grand total of $10.

Check the local . . . never mind.
But seriously, my sister once tried to give a kitten away. She put a sign up. The fucking delivery guy from the local . . . you guessed it . . . called her four fucking times!

bullshit. the club should be able to can her, unless she's limited to "fat beginners classes" or something. most people join health clubs with the delusion they'll actually get skinny. fit instructors sell memberships because, the clients think the work out the instructors lead are why the instructors are built so good. so people join and then quit 3 or 4 months later.
if you can see from the start the class ain't making you skinny less people are going to join. the club loses $$. what members it has might be more realistic but who gives a crap.
Hell, why not make Scores hire her- less 28K champaign nights, sure, but she can certainly shake as much - probably more than current dancers.

No, I am not unaware that this post is going to cause several morons to respond saying how afraid they are of the "beeg, beeg flower."

It's clearly a reference to Rico Carty, aka The Beeg Boy.

Plug for my brother's company: If you know anyone with fat kids, tell them to go here to get information about great weight loss camps/residential schools:

Also, thanks to whomever posted the Petharbor link. LA has a couple of Aussie Shepherds. But I think we're going to have to wait until we come back from our June Mediterranean vacation. Then it's time to get to work on landscaping, dog and babies, in that order.

I'll bet you're on t-mobile. There have been a few news stories about a wave of spam from tmo e-mail servers to handsets. Should end soon.

None of these people look even remotely healthy, IMHO. The weight-induced arthitis, by itself, is a problem, I bet.

Agreed. I'm all for self acceptance but it's silly to claim that you are healthy when you are clearly fat, regardless of whether you work out and claim to be "fit." It's like the people who claim they have "weak ankles." Your ankles aren't weak, they just weren't designed to carry around 300 pounds.
That said, I give those women credit for working out and feeling good about themselves. Their spandex licenses should be revoked, however.

First of all, I would never be on T-Mobile. Not until they get their act together. They've gotten a lot of scandalous news articles printed about their service (lack of) and customer service (again, lack of) and shady salespeople who lie.
I'm on AT&T. The first one I got was spooky. It'was like "hey, I hear you're looking for (some such product I was actually looking for), call me at (number). I asked everyone if they'd sent me a text message. No. Then after I had asked around, another friend said she got the same message - then I figured out it was spam.
I don't get a lot of it, but enough that it's annoying and if it's going to cost me I'm going to be pissed. I heard some story about a cell phone directory that some company is trying to compile, and some group is trying to block it, but that's all I've heard.

Clearly they are not in the best of shape, but in their defense, at least they are not sitting on their fat asses stuffing their faces. I vote for more of this for fatties and a trip to my "hey look I'm fat" store to buy some transitional clothing for their weight yo-yoing.
