So they're mainly nebbishes. What you're describing is death by a thousand annoyances.

Re death of the office, late 90s, I had a friend at a top tier firm in Philadelphia who worked with a dude who tried to work something like foreign trading desk hours. Wanted to avoid people and maximize time. I don't know, but I'm willing to bet he was shown the door.
