I was thinking more of the reputation inside the league. The LA Times has been highlighting stuff about him being a good teammate, how he was the only Laker to publicly stand up for Kobe last year during his trial, etc.
Maybe that's all bullshit too, but the local media has placed Malone inside a nice warm halo these days.

Whether or not a player is a "good guy" surely has more to do with how he cultivates the media than his game. Stockton never tried, so people respected him, but there wasn't this love fest that Malone gets.
