Senate leadership

So, if the polls are right and Daschle's out, who takes over (either as majority or minority leader)?

Impact?

Really? I pictured you as a 73-year old man, sitting in his lawn chair, shaking his fist and screaming at the neighbor kids.
So do I. But in about 40 years.

After the election ponderings.

Not Bob's guess -- Howard Dean. The grass-roots of the donkey's various efforts this year have been made up of people brought into the process by groups like MoveOn and ACT. I think that they go with Howard. Hillary is old school to them -- she's the Muskie to his McGovern, if you will (with Kerry lurking as the Humphrey, just to continue the 1968/2004 analogy).

If Kerry wins, whither the Grand Old Party? Jeb Bush has disclaimed a run in 2008, so who does that leave? McCain? Rudy? Dan Quayle? Ah-nold (if he gets that pesky Constitutional thingy fixed)?

Not Bob's take -- this one is tougher. I've said in the past that Rudy is too liberal (pro-choice, not anti-gay, etc.) to win a series of Republican primaries. I still think that's true, but if he runs against Hillary for the Senate in 2006 and wins, he may be viewed as the Holy Dragon Slayer, and the wingnuts might forgive him a bit of aposty for that victory. McCain is reliably conservative on social issues, but I get the impression that the party pros despise him. I don't think that the Constitution is going to get changed, and Kal-ee-fourn-ee-ya may yet descend into financial chaos, so I think that the Terminator is out.

If Bush loses, it is possible that the GOP will have to decide between the social conservatives (what has been called the Southern Wing) and the economic conservative small government types (the Western Wing). (Sebby, the Eastern Wing died of a heart attack while in the reverse cowgirl in New York City in 1979). What will they do? Should make for an interesting primary season in 2007/08. Or will someone -- a (forgive me) Bill Clinton figure -- appear to patch things over? Can Jeb do this, despite his pledge?
I'm not the prognosticator you are, NB, but I do have to congratulate you on the Full Nelson reference. Kudos.

Yes. All other things being equal, Republicans tend to vote in the morning. But there are other considerations as well, based on local issues. Inner city (D) precincts tend to report slower than suburban (R).
I just saw (on CNN) an overhead shot of a site in Georgia where the line is out the door, around the building, down the block and around another building. It has to be over 2,000 people long. Almost everyone on the line is black.

Amazing.

(Not offering it as anything in particular since I couldn't hear what they were saying about the line, other than to say that people are coming out to vote and waiting on these lines.)

No, there is another option and it is called embryo adoption. Moreover, it is not just already existing embryos that can be used for research purposes. They can create the embryos specifically for research. This has been done in privately funded labs in the US.

Could you tell if it was live? Because the polls close in GA in 50 min.

I suppose this probably varies from place to place, but what happens if you are at the polling location at the time the polls close, but haven't yet voted?

It looked live because it was getting dark.

My understanding is that if you're in line when the polling palce closes, you get to vote. At least, that's my understanding of the rule in Texas.

What is the line rule? If you're still in line when the polls close, are you SOL? While I can appreciate the certainty of the approach, it seems a little unfair, especially if someone is standing in line for an hour. I'd be unpleasantly surprised if I showed up an hour before the polls closed and didn't get to vote.

They're already lining up for tomorrow's election?

Perhaps the reason the line is so long is because the Rs are slowing stuff down in black precincts. Or, the Rs really did convince these people that voting is tomorrow, and so there's overcrowding in the evening because people found out at work that the voting is actually today.

I'm not saying either of those are actually happening, I'm just saying that lines out the door don't really show anything.

Not that you ever make sense, but still.
