Blanco esta Roja?
It will be interesting to see how many of these doctors actually return to Cuba (if they are really sent). However, my guess is they will only send doctors whose families they can hold hostage. In addition, they obviously won't show up without any supplies because their country does not have any.
Why do you defend one of the nastiest dictators in the world? I just don't get it? If she had hung out with Pinochet there would have never thrown in this defensive email, but Castro is OK?

Oh, I do, do I? And you said you didn't believe it yourself - I am so utterly shocked to find out you fibbed. Is that a special Hank way of flirting? You'll never get NotMe back that way.

NotMe is gone. I can't say how I know that, but you have to trust me on this one. Gone.

Again. I don't get your defensive reaction to Sean Penn. He is someone you should disavow and not focus on. The guy is a nut job. When conservatives make jokes about him you should just let it pass. But why defend him?

You are a funny, funny man.
Hey, did you say something in an earlier post re Katrina about it not being legal to use the regular army in US cities? (If it was someone else, I apologize -- but anyway, this is a real question, not a slam.) If that's true, how was Eisenhower able to send the 101st Airborne into Little Rock? And didn't regular army troops restore order in places like Detroit and Newark during riots in the late 1960s?

I think Hank was misinterpreting the Posse Comitatus Act; although his misinterpration pales compared with the way that Nagin fellow missed the proverbial bus, npi.
Also, unlike Nagin, I am sure Hank will admit his error.

I understand Pinochet was quite the fan of the Official LT drink of 2001 (or was it 2002?), the Pisco Sour, so I guess I can understand hanging out with him, too.
I'm not defending Castro. I think his offer was a publicity stunt and don't have a problem with the US government turning him down.
This may come as a surpirse to you Spanky, but not everything posted on this board is done in earnest.

Tomorrow's newspapers today
From tomorrow's Wall Street Journal Op-Ed page:
Many in the media are turning their eyes toward the federal government, rather than considering the culpability of city and state officials. I am fully aware of the challenges of having a quick and responsive emergency response to a major disaster. And there is definitely a time for accountability; but what isn't fair is to dump on the federal officials and avoid those most responsible -- local and state officials who failed to do their job as the first responders. The plain fact is, lives were needlessly lost in New Orleans due to the failure of Louisiana's governor, Kathleen Blanco, and the city's mayor, Ray Nagin.
The primary responsibility for dealing with emergencies does not belong to the federal government. It belongs to local and state officials who are charged by law with the management of the crucial first response to disasters. First response should be carried out by local and state emergency personnel under the supervision of the state governor and his/her emergency operations center.
A year ago, as Hurricane Ivan approached, New Orleans ordered an evacuation but did not use city or school buses to help people evacuate. As a result many of the poorest citizens were unable to evacuate. Fortunately, the hurricane changed course and did not hit New Orleans, but both Gov. Blanco and Mayor Nagin acknowledged the need for a better evacuation plan. Again, they did not take corrective actions.
The city's evacuation plan states: "The city of New Orleans will utilize all available resources to quickly and safely evacuate threatened areas." But even though the city has enough school and transit buses to evacuate 12,000 citizens per fleet run, the mayor did not use them. To compound the problem, the buses were not moved to high ground and were flooded.
The actions and inactions of Gov. Blanco and Mayor Nagin are a national disgrace due to their failure to implement the previously established evacuation plans of the state and city.
Mayor Nagin didn't use the buses. Why? WHY??? WHY?!?!?!?!?!?

If there was something, anything in the NYT article suggesting that it reported all of Souter's remarks, you might -- might -- have a non-dumb-ass point. As it is, I can't believe I'm arguing with you, since all you are doing is trashing Souter for the sake of it. PPD.

I don't care to defend Sean Penn. I'm just annoyed that with all of the stories from the Gulf Coast that matter, someone wasted the time and electrons to report that his boat was leaking.
eta:
Another reporter saw this:
- "In the chaos that was Causeway Boulevard, this group of refugees stood out: a 6-year-old boy walking down the road, holding a 5-month-old, surrounded by five toddlers who followed him around as if he were their leader":
They were holding hands. Three of the children were about 2 years old, and one was wearing only diapers. A 3-year-old girl, who wore colorful barrettes on the ends of her braids, had her 14-month-old brother in tow. The 6-year-old spoke for all of them, and he told rescuers his name was Deamonte Love.
Thousands of human stories have flown past relief workers in the last week, but few have touched them as much as the seven children who were found wandering together Thursday at an evacuation point in downtown New Orleans. In the Baton Rouge headquarters of the rescue operation, paramedics tried to coax their names out of them; nurses who examined them stayed up that night, brooding.
Transporting the children alone was "the hardest thing I've ever done in my life, knowing that their parents are either dead" or that they had been abandoned, said Pat Coveney, a Houston emergency medical technician who put them into the back of his ambulance and drove them out of New Orleans.
"It goes back to the same thing," he said. "How did a 6-year-old end up being in charge of six babies?"
LA Times
Heartbreaking, but I guess it's not as much fun as ridiculing Sean Penn.
