I just learned his oldest son went missing from a boat in Lake Huron almost 2 months ago. The kid and his fiancee were in a boat heading to Mackinac Island, The boat was found empty, with equipment running and the engine idling. The waters had not been rough.

They found the girl, drowned, but never found the guy. They've given up the search.

How fucked is that? Their only hope for him to be alive is if he killed her and ran off.

They are pretty serious Catholics, so the no body to bury thing is tough.

And I can't decide what to do/send or when. At some point they will have some type service I'm sure, but till then what? send a card saying "we're hoping it turns out okay?" But there's no realistic hope.

A condolences card? Not yet.

But I want to send something.
How about just a note saying that they're in your thoughts and/or prayers?

I appreciate the recognition. I do so much - not just for me and my loved ones, but for the entire human race - and while wearing awful clothes, to boot, and yet I get so little credit.

I would send a note expressing your concern for his son and his own state of mind and offering to be there for him and his family.

It's not too pessimistic, nor does it offer false hope.

That's cause you're really fat right now and nobody wants to be mistaken for expressing any interest in you sexually. Once the kid is born, you will be heaped with admiration and praise.

Assuming you get back into decent shape in a hurry and the kid isn't butt-ugly.

No cuffs on the casual pants. Only on the suits.

I don’t wear any pants that fit in-between casual pants (JCrew type stuff) and the pants youget with suits. I don’t do the sportcoat and trouser look. Its either super casual or a suit.

A Hickory Farms gift box is a great idea. Nothing conveys sympathy like seasoned meats.

Get him the “Your Son’s a Murderer or He’s Dead” Fall sausage sampler.

No Harry and David’s. Fruit at a time like that would be in poor taste.

Thanks. But I'm not sure sausage would be right either, given the real possibility of a bloated corpse showing up at some point.

Maybe some marzipan?

I'm glad to see you put some thought into this. I would have thought you'd suggest a roll of Lifesavers or some other flippant answer.

And in the Silver Lining Department, this from TMQ:

Obscure College Feat : Bill Eslinger of Woodbury, N.Y., reports that after California of Pennsylvania beat Mansfield 88-12, Mansfield issued a press release boasting that kick returner Ronnie Montgomery "set a school record with 10 kickoff returns for 266 yards." Eslinger notes that 10 kickoff returns "hardly seems like an accomplishment, considering this means the opposing team scored at least nine times." The press release laments that Montgomery "was just two returns … from tying the NCAA record" for most kickoff returns in a game. There's always next week! All Mansfield has to do is surrender at least 11 scores.

If you're thinking bloated corpse, then Sebby nay be in the right ballpark. Have you considered head cheese?

Try a heartfelt glass-half-full note: “Well, you’re old, so no matter what, you’ll know whether he was a victim or a perpetrator real soon.”

This won’t work if he’s an atheist. In that case, you should give him a gift card to MexicanPharmacy.com with a note that says “Fuck it. You’ve done all you can.”

It's this material that makes me want to fight both rp and Paigow for you.

I don't have the stomach to fight a pregnant woman, and Paigow's likely to slit my throat.

So I sit and I pine.
