I'm sure he planned to step down then, but we all expected a little delay.

She's a Member of Congress. You would think that the security guard might recognize her (especially since this sort of thing has happened before, and they Capitol Police have reportedly put her picture up with a note that says "hey, she's a Congresswoman.").
- The altercation took place at a checkpoint building in the Capitol complex. According to accounts by police officers and Congressional officials, Ms. McKinney went around a metal detector, as members of Congress are allowed to do. The police officer reportedly told her to stop, and when she did not he apparently tried to stop her, provoking a physical response from Ms. McKinney.
She has acknowledged that she was not wearing the lapel pin that identifies her as a member of Congress. But she said that the police responsible for protecting lawmakers should recognize them on sight.

No, but like I said, suspect that the capitol police are more of a pain in the ass than concert security.
Plus, Naomi Campbell throws her cell phone at people all the time, and she hasn't had to resign from anything.

At other security checkpoints -airline or courts- "insiders" have to show ID to go around- do Congressmen need to do something similar? I can't imagine a lapel pin is all that identifies them. And whether he should have recognized or not, perhaps she would have been better off introducing herself- then- if he stopped her again- she could get mad.
I mean the point of the security is to protect all of congress. the cops need to error on the side of challenging, don't they?

If not, I agree it's bizarre (unless the party told him to leave now, so he's not an issue for the election this fall, which it could be if he's still around)
|
Yes. The governor gets to appoint a replacement. I'm still not sure why he did this a month after the primary unless Tom Campbell was just plain unpalatable to the Republican party.
I suspect that Steve Stockman, a true looney Republican that decided to run in District 22 as an independent because he can't stand Nick Lampson, the Dem who's running there, is also Unacceptable to the Gop.

What does this have to do with Tom DeLay?

It doesn't. But the problem with arguning about DeLay is that no one here has ever defended him. Hell, spankster tried to run him out. So if you want to fight about Delay, you'll have to hope Penske comes back with a sock to argue back.
My point is that you guys, in contrast, cannot get your lips around the words "I agree this Democrat was wrong." GGG is the only one of you with any integrity.

I just don't see how McKinney's actions are significant enough to talk about.

But you've posted twice now. Can you type the words "I think she was wrong." -see if you can do that, then hit "post reply." this is a sort of test, i just want to see if you can do it.

According to her statement, she showed him her congressional ID.
I get your point, though. However, consider the following.
One of the local courthouses (in the lovely hamlet of Beaucoup Egypt) allows judges and members of the Podunk Bar to walk around the metal detector, which is a huge perk because the line is always so damn long.
Anyway, attorneys show their bar cards. Judges just assume that they will be recognized because, heck, it's their courthouse. Thanks to the vagaries of history, this local town has a sizeable minority group, which has historically been poorly treated and hassled by The Man. (Let's assume that we have a bunch of Chinese who have been here since their great-great-whatever-grandparents built the local railroad as coolie labor in the 1870s.)
Anyway, there's a judge there of Chinese ancestry. Let's assume that all of his judge friends get a pass by the guard when they come back to the courthouse from lunch, but he consistently gets told "hey -- get back in line, Chow Yun Fat!"
I wouldn't excuse the judge for smacking Rusty with his Corpus Juris Secundum, but I can't say I'd blame him for trying to ignore the guy.

I think she's an idiot, shouldn't have done it, and she should apologize. I think that her arrest and subsequent 20 hours of community service or whatever she ends up serving will probably make up for the crime and I think that the Capitol / Congressional / whoever they are Police should probably start watching Stephen Colbert's 434 part series "Better Know a District" so they can identify representatives on sight.

i bet the capitol Police have greater turn over and new guards than does your courthouse, so your Judge has a great right to indignation.
Security going into events, ball games or concerts, they check everyone in bags and under coats. So you have this big mass of people not really moving and jammed together. The purpose is to keep everyone more secure, but it seems to me like it's really just creating a concentrated target for a bomber. the bomber doesn't care if he kills inside the stadium or outside. It just seems like that security is really of no value, and actually creates a really high impact target.

I think she was wrong, that she's behaving like an idiot, and she should probably lose her next election.
My point is that, on one of the banner days for Republicans everywhere, your ire is apparently saved for a twit Congresswoman who threw a fit at a security guard. Wanting to change the subject is certainly understandable, but just so you know, your jumping up and down and yelling "Oooo! Ooooo! You're being hypocritical because you won't chastise some Democrat!" can't erase the smiles today.
