He wasn't cruel to you. Unless it's like that torts thing where if you toss a supersoft pillow at someone, and it hits the person's shoulder, and the shoulder breaks because of some obscure bone disorder, you could be liable for the injuries resulting from the assault even though it wouldn't have injured the average person.
I think in the textbook case, it was a skull.
