It looked really deep, so use spoiler space if you are going to talk about the conclusion or, more generally, its Message.

Weekend TV Update

Caught up with the pilot of Friday Night Lights. It's as good as people say. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like it's getting the ratings it needs.

It's not a horrible concept for a movie, but its execution was miserable.

Is it sad?

That I used to confuse Buck O'Neil with Buck Henry?

The book is a pretty good piece of airplane-reading fluff.

Although your guys pitched great (and there's no question about that), it's hard to tell how much of their success can be attributed to their skill or Yankee fucking futility.

Exactly. I've been saying this again and again and again. Last year we played like shit. How did we improve? We brought up young guys who tried to get on base, move runners over, hustled, infused some energy.

This year? We were playing like shit with that "awesome" lineup until we were hit with injuries, which gave us another opportunity to play some young guys. We were playing great before Matsui and Sheff returned and then we turned around and gave all that up in favor of more power.

Here is what we don't seem to understand: You don't need 8 rbi guys in the fucking lineup. It doesn't work and frankly, it makes no sense. No one plays baseball when we have the lineup packed like this. They all sit around and play home run derby, each player swinging for the fences, knowing that if they fail, the next guy will hit one out. It's absolutely pathetic.

You must have a mix of guys. 3 big rbi guys. The rest should be role players. Guys who can move runners over. Guys who can steal a base. We were second in the American League in stolen bases during the season. Try to steal one. Make something happen. Hit and run. Be proactive. I know Pudge is fantastic at throwing guys out, but how many attempts did we have during this series? I think it was zero. And that's partly Torre's fault, partly Cashman's fault. Torre feels like we can't risk doing anything but standing on base because every guy at the plate is capable of hitting one 400 feet at any time.

We don't have a team. We have a bunch of sluggers who can't run, play shitty defense, can't throw and all slump when we need them. Pathetic. Really. If we're going to spend money, spend it on young arms. It's like we tried with Weaver and that didn't work out, so we completely gave up.

As for us:

1) Firing Torre is an okay move - ONLY if they hire Girardi. Bringing in Pinella is a recipe for disaster with this team. DISASTER!!!! I understand the need for someone less laid back - Torre completely mismanaged pitching in Game 1 and should have started Melky in Game 3 - but Lou ain't the answer, especially when Mattingly and Guidry will have more sway with the veterans (not to mention the fans) from Day 1. If they name Lou, Cashman, Donnie Baseball and Gator should quit.
I love Girardi, but I'm not sure if he's ready to handle a veteran squad. I used to think these overpaid assholes needed to be kicked in the ass by someone like Sweet Lou, but I'm not so sure anymore. Maybe we should just keep Torre and give him some fucking pitching and fewer power hitters. He doesn't know what to do with an overstacked lineup. And his managing-without-managing style doesn't do much when things get bad with the lineup. He's great at keeping players calm and focused and taking the heat from the press, but when things are bad, he doesn't do anything but keep players calm and let them work it out themselves. That shit doesn't always work.

2) A-Rod, while not the prime reason for our fade-out, is the face of it. He's gotta go, even if it means we pay the other half of his salary (that Texas isnt already paying). The SF Giants or the Angels would love him. Bring up Eric Duncan. Play Miguel Cairo. Whatever. Just get rid of the trauma.
He must go. He fucking sucks. And you know why? Because he puts up all his big numbers against average to below average pitchers. I don't know why no one talks about this. The guy cannot hit quality pitching. It's not his head. He doesn't choke. He's just not a very good hitter against superior pitching. That's why it looks like he chokes in the playoffs -- it's because he's facing quality starter after quality starter.

3) Sign Mussina. Thank Sheffield and say goodbye. Draft a catcher. And thank god that Boston will still end up in third next year behind Toronto.
We'll probably keep Mussina, but is he really worth $17 million? I don't fucking think so. Decline the option and tell him we'll sign him for less. And then go out and spend on pitching, pitching, pitching.

Sheff will leave and Boston will snatch him up and he'll have a great season. Boston will keep Manny and think they have a loaded lineup and then they'll start having the same fucking problems we've been having with too many power hitting jackasses batting back to back.

As flat as they were in Game 2, I would have started Melky and Craig Wilson just to get some speed. Whatever. They need to dump A-Rod and Sheffield, keep going with the youth movement (a la Cano, Melky), see if Duncan can hit, and bring up Hughes mid year.
Here is what pissed me off the most: We could have signed Beltran for $15 mil before the start of last season. We refused, even though he was begging to come to us and actually lowered his price from what he had already negotiated (at that point) with the Mets. "Too expensive," we said. "Not interested." And then, before the beginning of this season, we sign Johnny fucking Damon for $15 mil. That has to be the dumbest fucking move we've ever made. We pass on a five-tool guy for Damon. It still makes me sick.

And everyone is sucking Cashman's dick for signing Abreu. Jesus. Think about our outfield with Beltran patroling center, Matsui in left and Sheff in right.
