nononono is not objecting to label-dropping, as I understand it. Her point is that label-dropping and at the same time denying that one is label-dropping is hypocritical.

Maybe dmitri Young hank? he was a Tiger but got kicked off, plus he has good hair. A Prophet mohammed Hank would offend, no?

I really need to put some thought into this, and any ideas are welcome.
How about an I-am-clearly-cheating-because-I've-never-been-this-good-and-don't-know-how-to-lie-Hank?

I knew that motherfucker was cheating. His stuff hasn't been that electric since '92.

You've got that right. I have been unable to articulate exactly why all the name-dropping and lust for expensive STUFF is so discomfiting, and this explanation makes the most sense.

I'm not a social climber. I don't want to *be* those people I just want to blend. And I do.

And not for nothing, you're plugged into that whole scene much more than I.

A matter of degree is the point, pony. Everyday, morning, noon and night is different than hearing dtb say she likes her TSEs or gwnc say she scored some Missoni at Woodbury Common. One says, "hey, I found some cool stuff," and the other says, "hey, think more of me because I spent a lot of money - or want to." I'd never suggest I haven't had fashion-, clothes- and yes, brand-lust. I love the intertwined Cs on my favorite pair of cap-toe pumps, sure. Sometimes identifying the brand is very useful to give a sense of the style or look of a thing, for sure. But that is all very different.

Shoes are overrated.

On a related note, I qualified for Boston (barely) yesterday. Since Chicago is such a late race, I'm in for 2007 or 2008. Penske probably won't want to wait until 2008, though, since I think that's the year he turns 50. Of course, he has to qualify first.

YOU'RE WRONG. wrong, I say. They do the same thing I do and even more so...they kick it up a notch on the designers and never get called on it. And I get the shitstorm for it.

I can say with confidence that no one, absolutely no one, about whom I care one bit, or who can make any difference whatsoever in my life, makes a judgment about me based on whether I am wearing something expensive or not.

Partners have asked me if I am married to a banker, people have mistaken me for an atty, female partners appeared annoyed I'm in the same double pearls and cashmere and appear indistinguishable to them, clothes are how people draw lines in the sand. if you think outside of the box and are aware of how people judge you that gets outside of their comfort zone because they know how vapid others are especially in NY.
Actually, this sort of thing has caused a lot of problems in hospitals. The "uniforms" used to be a lot more regimented than they are now, and patients have difficulty distinguishing between a nurse (who can help) and a desk clerk (who can't), because everyone is wearing the same scrubs. Same goes for half the staff wandering around with lab coats, so no one knows if they're talking to a physician or a pharmacist at first glance.

The nursing profession is seriously considering going back to the white starched uniforms that they used to wear. They would like to distinguish themselves from the respiratory therapists, phlebotamists, social workers and janitorial staff that wander around hospitals wearing substantially similar outfits.

How did that poor guy fall? Was it slippery near the finish? It looked as if he really banged his head badly.

I'm sure they'd peeled up the paint by the time you finished, but what was the deal with Cheryuat's slip? Was there a label at the finish, or paint?

I don't know. He was about 15 seconds behind me.
